Waspaloy (UNS N07001): Properties, Standards & Supply
Basic Description
Sagiant Piping Industries supports enquiries for Waspaloy (UNS N07001, Werkstoff 2.4654) as bar, forgings, rings, sheet/plate, wire, fasteners and welded tube (AMS 5586) for aerospace and gas-turbine applications. Waspaloy is an age-hardenable nickel-base superalloy strengthened by gamma-prime Ni₃(Al,Ti) precipitation. Producer service guidance distinguishes roughly 650°C for critical rotating applications from about 870°C for less demanding applications — these are guidance, not a single design temperature covering tensile, fatigue, creep and oxidation together. Grades are supplied by form and condition (solution treated, or solution-stabilized-precipitation aged) against the applicable AMS/ASTM references, with acceptance limits and editions confirmed per order and EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 documentation. Waspaloy is a registered trademark; Sagiant is an independent supplier and stockist, not the alloy producer, and the offer is mainly solid and flat products rather than seamless pipe.

Identity, specifications and supply conditions
| Record | Treatment |
|---|---|
| Standard wrought Waspaloy | Main N07001 / 2.4654 identity |
| Solution-treated material | Separate supply/property condition |
| Solution + stabilized + precipitation-treated | Separate condition tied to specification and thermal cycle |
| Alternative melt routes | Recorded as the actual producer route and order requirement, not a new chemical grade |
| “Super Waspaloy” | A producer-documented modified chemistry exists; current composition, specification and availability confirmed before adding as a stocked row |
| Welding wire (e.g. RTW / AMS 5828) | Separate consumable record; base-metal tables do not describe deposited weld metal |
| Powder / cast / additive routes | Added only with route-specific evidence; wrought acceptance values are not transferred automatically |
| Comparison alloys | 718, 282, R-41 — alternatives requiring engineering assessment, not equivalents |
Wire is identified as either matching welding consumable or non-welding (engineering/heading) wire, since the two are not interchangeable.
Mechanical Properties
| Property (typical, aged) | Value |
|---|---|
| Tensile strength | ~1275 MPa |
| 0.2% yield strength | ~795 MPa |
| Elongation | ~25% |
| Hardness | Aged range varies with treatment (up to ~40–44 HRC); use the applicable standard limit, not a single 34 HRC maximum |
Solution-treated properties differ from fully aged, and sheet, plate, bar and forgings differ from each other — each is a separate dataset with its own source, form, size and condition. Elevated-temperature tensile, creep (temperature/stress/time/strain), stress-rupture, fatigue (LCF/HCF) and thermal-exposure data are supplied with the applicable qualified dataset, otherwise identified as unavailable; code/OEM design allowables are distinguished from producer typicals.
Physical Properties
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Density | ~8.19 g/cm³ (sourced approximate) |
| Melting range | Per producer datasheet |
| Elastic / shear modulus | Per producer temperature series |
| Thermal & electrical | Heat capacity, thermal conductivity/diffusivity, electrical resistivity and mean expansion per producer temperature table |
| Magnetic response | Qualitative unless a sourced permeability with field/condition is available |
Temperature-dependent properties use each source’s own series and units rather than a single constant; a melting interval is not a maximum operating temperature.
Standards by Product Form & Condition
| Form / role | Reference |
|---|---|
| Sheet, strip & plate | AMS 5544 (not a bar/rod specification) |
| Welded tubing | AMS 5586 (not a wire specification) |
| Welding wire | AMS 5828 (separate from engineering/heading wire) |
| Forgings | AMS 5704 (specified solution/stabilization/precipitation condition; verify current scope) |
| Bars, forgings & rings (solution-treated) | AMS 5706 — not every shipment labelled fully aged |
| Solution + stabilized + precipitation | AMS 5707 / AMS 5709 (bars/forgings) |
| Solution-treated (1079°C route) | AMS 5708 (bars/wire/forgings/rings/heading stock); not interchangeable with 5709 |
| Rings / forgings (additional) | AMS 5768 / 5769 — verify issuing-standard scope & applicability before adding |
| ASTM / ASME | ASTM B637 / ASME SB637 — verify N07001, form, class & adopted edition before promising conformity |
| Fasteners | Exact material, finished-fastener/drawing, thread & inspection requirements (not “AMS bolting specs”) |
A dimensional standard (B36.10M/B36.19M) does not by itself certify Waspaloy material. Older producer brochures help discover references but do not prove current standard status.
Available Forms, Sizes & Dimensions
| Form | Basis |
|---|---|
| Bar / billet | Diameter, finish, length & condition, subject to confirmation |
| Forgings & rings | Rings by OD / ID / height and manufacturing route |
| Sheet / plate / strip | Thickness, width, length & tolerances |
| Wire | Welding vs engineering/heading wire distinguished, each to its own specification |
| Welded tube (AMS 5586) | OD, wall, length, welded route, tolerances, annealed condition & tests — a tubing spec does not prove seamless pipe or standard NPS inventory |
| Fasteners | Thread system/class, part standard, manufacturing & heat-treatment sequence, acceptance tests & traceability |
No invented pipe schedules: any offered pipe requires a manufacturing route and material specification first. Broad bar, flat-product and fastener ranges are confirmed against supply evidence; unsupported combinations are marked “not currently offered” or “subject to technical confirmation”.
Temperature & Service
| Duty | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Critical rotating applications | ~650°C (producer guidance) |
| Less demanding applications | ~870°C (producer guidance) |
| By application | Disc/shaft/ring/fastener or fabricated component: temperature, stress, life, duty cycle, atmosphere, coating & inspection |
| Corrosion | Oxidation performance is not proof of acid, chloride-pitting or universal hot-corrosion resistance; sulfidation/salt/carburisation/aqueous evidence added only where relevant and sourced |
The former blanket “hottest rotating parts to 870°C” is replaced by the split above; usable temperature depends on stress, life, duty cycle and atmosphere.
Heat Treatment
| Step | Example (producer route) |
|---|---|
| Post-fabrication solution | ~1066–1093°C |
| Stabilization | ~996°C / 2 h / air cool |
| Intermediate age | ~843°C / 4 h / air cool |
| Final age | ~760°C / 16 h / air cool |
| Alternative solution route | ~1079°C solution (AMS 5708 route) |
Hot-forging temperature guidance is separate from the room-temperature delivery condition; the exact solution/stabilization/precipitation cycle, heating rate and cooling are set by the selected specification and form.
Welding & Fabrication
| Topic | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Strain-age cracking | Controlled by filler choice, joint design, restraint, heating rate and heat treatment sequence |
| Filler | Identified as matching welding consumable (e.g. AMS 5828 / RTW) or non-welding wire — the two are not interchangeable |
| Procedure controls | Joint design, restraint, cleaning, shielding, interpass/heat-input control, solution-treatment heating rate, PWHT sequence & inspection |
| Forming & machining | Forming limits, intermediate annealing, grain-size control, work hardening, machining/tooling & surface-condition requirements |
Weld-metal properties are distinguished from base-metal properties; procedure-specific restrictions are preserved rather than simplified.
Testing & Documentation
| Item | Scope |
|---|---|
| Mechanical | Room-temperature and elevated tensile, stress-rupture and grain size per contracted method & acceptance criteria |
| NDT | As specified for the form & class |
| PMI | Confirms alloy identity within the instrument/method capability; does not establish complete chemistry |
| Certification | EN 10204 3.1 (manufacturer) vs 3.2 (independent/third-party); document type does not inherently require every test |
The contracted tests, methods and acceptance criteria are agreed at ordering rather than promised unconditionally.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Waspaloy a family of grades or one alloy?
Waspaloy is primarily one alloy identity, UNS N07001 (Werkstoff 2.4654) — not a large standardised family. What varies is supply condition (solution treated, or solution + stabilized + precipitation treated), product form and melt route. A producer-documented higher-strength “Super Waspaloy” modified chemistry exists, but its current composition, specification and availability are confirmed before it is offered as a stocked grade. Waspaloy is a registered trademark; Sagiant is an independent supplier and stockist, not the producer.
What is the full chemical composition of Waspaloy?
Producer general limits are approximately Cr 18.0–21.0, Co 12.0–15.0, Mo 3.5–5.0, Ti 2.75–3.25, Al 1.2–1.6, C 0.02–0.10, B 0.003–0.010, Zr 0.02–0.12, with Cu, Fe, Si, Mn, P and S controlled and nickel as balance. That is a producer general-limit table, not a substitute for tighter order-specific AMS/ASTM limits; the mill certificate governs, and a dash is not zero.
What hardness does aged Waspaloy reach?
Not a fixed 34 HRC maximum. Aged Waspaloy hardness varies with the heat-treatment cycle and can extend to about 40–44 HRC depending on treatment. The applicable value is the limit or typical range stated for the specific condition in the selected specification, not a single universal maximum.
Which specification applies to each product form?
By form: AMS 5544 for sheet/strip/plate, AMS 5586 for welded tubing, AMS 5828 for welding wire, AMS 5704/5706/5707/5708/5709 for bars, forgings and rings in specified solution or solution-stabilized-precipitation conditions, and ASTM B637 / ASME SB637 where adopted. AMS 5544 is not a bar specification and AMS 5586 is not a wire specification. The form, condition and adopted edition are confirmed per order.
What temperature can Waspaloy be used at?
Producer guidance distinguishes roughly 650°C for critical rotating applications from about 870°C for less demanding applications — these are guidance, not design approval, and no single temperature covers tensile, fatigue, creep and oxidation together. Usable temperature depends on stress, required life, duty cycle and atmosphere for the specific component.
Is Waspaloy easy to weld?
No — Waspaloy is susceptible to strain-age cracking and is not described as readily weldable. Successful welding depends on filler choice (a matching consumable such as AMS 5828 / RTW, distinguished from non-welding wire), joint design, restraint, cleaning, shielding, interpass and heat-input control, heating rate and the heat-treatment sequence, all in a qualified procedure. Weld-metal properties are treated separately from base metal.
What information is needed for a quotation?
Provide the product form, dimensions and tolerances, quantity, delivery condition (solution / fully aged), the exact specification and edition, service temperature, stress and duty, required testing (RT/elevated tensile, stress-rupture, grain size, NDT), traceability and certificate type (EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2), finish and delivery location.
