Sheets, Plates & Coils

Flat-rolled metal — sheet, plate and coil — in carbon, alloy, stainless and duplex grades. Stainless is supplied to ASTM A240; carbon and alloy pressure-vessel plate to A516 / A387 (under the A20 general requirements) and structural plate to A36 / EN, in hot-rolled, cold-rolled and finished surfaces. Pressure-vessel compliance depends on the specified material and delivery requirements, not thickness alone.

How it is made

Flat-rolled product is hot-rolled from slab and, for thinner gauges, cold-rolled and annealed. Stainless is solution annealed and pickled (No.1), or cold-rolled to 2B / BA / No.4 finishes; carbon pressure-vessel plate (A516) is supplied as-rolled, normalised or normalised & tempered, with Charpy impact testing where the grade, thickness or order requires; Cr-Mo plate (A387) is normalised & tempered, with grade- and class-specific heat treatment (Grade 91 requires closely controlled tempering). Plate is ultrasonically examined to ASTM A578 at the agreed acceptance level where the code or client requires; coil is supplied mill-edge or slit to width for downstream blanking and forming.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between sheet and plate?

As a catalogue convention, sheet is generally under 6 mm with finished surfaces and plate is 6 mm and above; the exact boundary and form definition depend on the standard, width and manufacturing route. Coil is a delivery form, not a separate grade.

What finishes and delivery conditions do you supply?

Stainless sheet in 2B, No.1, No.4 and BA surface finishes. Hot-rolled and cold-rolled are processing routes, and annealed, normalised or normalised & tempered are delivery conditions — these are separate from the surface finish and are confirmed per order.

Which pressure-vessel plate do you supply?

ASTM A516 carbon and A387 Cr-Mo plate, ordered under the A20 general requirements, with impact testing and ultrasonic examination (A578) where the grade, thickness, code or order requires. A387 Grade 91 is supplied as Class 2 with closely controlled heat treatment.

Is all thick plate pressure grade?

No. Whether a plate meets a pressure-vessel specification depends on the ordered material, general requirements and delivery / test conditions, not thickness alone. Structural plate (A36, EN S275 / S355) and pressure-vessel plate (A516 / A387) are ordered to different specifications.

Is 2205 duplex a single grade?

‘2205’ covers both UNS S31803 and the tighter S32205 chemistry. They are separate specifications, so dual S31803 / S32205 certification is confirmed against the order rather than assumed.

How is sheet or plate weight calculated?

Theoretical mass uses the grade's density: kg/m² = density (kg/m³) × thickness (mm) ÷ 1000, and kg/piece = density × thickness × width × length ÷ 10⁹ with dimensions in mm. Use the grade's own density — 7.85 g/cm³ is not correct for every stainless or nickel alloy — and note that thickness tolerance, edge losses and packing affect the actual and shipped mass.
