Basic Description

Sagiant Piping Industries supports enquiries for MONEL nickel-copper alloy pipes, tubes, butt weld fittings, forged fittings, flanges, bars and other specified product forms. Core grades are Monel 400 (UNS N04400), free-machining R-405 (N04405) and age-hardenable K-500 (N05500), with wider family names available reference-only or to order. These alloys resist flowing seawater, brine, hydrofluoric acid and reducing chemical environments, with condition-specific limits, and K-500 adds age-hardened strength with a low-magnetic response. Grades are compared by composition, supply condition, applicable ASTM/ASME standard and service environment, and availability, inspection scope and documentation (EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2) are confirmed against each enquiry. MONEL is a registered trademark of Special Metals Corporation; Sagiant is an independent supplier and stockist, not the alloy producer.

Producer limiting composition. Ni + Co is a combined quantity with a 63% minimum (no fixed upper limit). A dash means not separately specified, not zero. R-405 differs from 400 only by a controlled sulphur range for free machining. These are not heat analyses or a substitute for the purchase specification — the ordered specification edition and heat/product certificate control acceptance.

“Core” grades have completed technical records; “Reference” and “Historical” names are quoted until chemistry, form, specification and availability are confirmed — a listing is not a stock statement. Related boundary items are tracked separately: alloy 400L (N04402, VDM) is distinct from 400; welding consumables such as 60/67/190 belong in the welding section, not the base-alloy register; cast nickel-copper grades need their own casting specification. UNS cross-references are not substitution approvals.

Indicative values only; a figure valid for one diameter, condition or form can be misleading as a family minimum. Contractual minima, specification maxima and typical producer measurements are different datasets. Confirm grade, UNS, product form, manufacturing route, size interval, temper/heat treatment, specification edition and test method on the certificate. K-500 weld metal may not develop the strength of aged base material — treat joint performance separately. Elevated-temperature, fatigue, impact, creep and design-code allowable stresses are taken from the applicable code/specification, not derived from room-temperature tensile strength.

Split density by grade — a single family value misstates K-500 mass estimates; use the grade-specific density in the weight calculator. Melting ranges are not service temperatures. Thermal conductivity, specific heat, electrical resistivity, thermal-expansion coefficient (with its interval) and permeability with temperature/condition are provided per grade on enquiry. 400’s magnetic behaviour is temperature-dependent near room temperature, so it is not categorically “weakly magnetic”. R-405 may reference 400 for certain physical constants, but that does not make its mechanical or welding behaviour identical.

A routing matrix for specification review, not a universal certification. ASTM B165 covers N04400 seamless pipe/tube and B865 covers N05500 bar, rod, wire, forgings and forging stock. ASTM and ASME SB adoption editions are not automatically identical; legacy federal/aerospace/EN references are confirmed against current or contractually specified documents. Rename designation “equivalents” as cross-references — matching designations do not prove identical limits, heat treatment, dimensions or code acceptance.

Available Forms, Sizes & Availability

Availability is confirmed per enquiry with stocked / sourced / made-to-order status — the ranges below are indicative, not a statement that every grade is held in every size, schedule and condition.

FormSize rangeWall / thickness / ratingDimensional / material route
Seamless pipe1/8" – 18" NPS (verify per record)Specified schedule / wall; S schedules and STD/XS/XXS are not one continuous seriesB36.10M dims; B165 material

Bar6–200 mm dia (verify per record)Annealed / cold-drawn (400); solution-treated + aged (K-500)B164 (400/R-405) / B865 (K-500)

Class 2500 is a flange pressure class, not “2500 psi”, and B16.5 Class 2500 extends only to NPS 12. STD/XS do not always equal Sch 40/80, and 40S/80S differ from 40/80 at some sizes. Keep dimensional standards (B36.10 / B36.19) separate from material specifications. See the schedule chart and weight calculator.

Corrosion & Temperature Selection

  • Seawater: 400 resists flowing seawater well, but performance depends on velocity, aeration, crevices, deposits and biofouling. K-500 shows different environmental-cracking behaviour from 400, and stagnant or slow-moving seawater conditions warrant specific review — a general marine statement is not unrestricted suitability.
  • Hydrofluoric acid: resistance depends on HF concentration, water content, aeration and contaminants; suitability is condition-specific, not universal.
  • Acids/alkalis: strong in reducing conditions and many alkalis; oxidising acids and oxidising species (for example ferric/cupric ions, aerated oxidising media) attack nickel-copper alloys — confirm with data.
  • Sour service: qualification follows the applicable ISO 15156 / NACE MR0175 route with product condition, hardness and environment; high-strength aged K-500 needs particular attention. An MTC/PMI report does not establish it.
  • Published corrosion rates require concentration, temperature, aeration, velocity, duration and method — avoid a single “excellent” rating across all conditions.

Temperature guidance distinguishes continuous/intermittent exposure, air versus process fluid, pressure/stress, thermal cycling and heat-treatment stability. “Useful to ~540°C” is not an allowable pressure-design temperature; hydrogen / cathodic-protection effects on aged K-500 need specialist review.

Welding, Fabrication & Machining

  • Clean and control contamination before forming/welding; use a qualified WPS/PQR. Filler is chosen by service, process, joint, dilution and post-weld condition — matching the family name does not guarantee aged base-metal strength.
  • K-500: plan a rough-machine → age → finish-machine sequence; account for dimensional change on ageing and for galling in fastener assembly. Weld metal may not reach aged base-metal strength.
  • R-405 is a sulphur-controlled free-machining grade; the producer bulletin discusses standard joining methods, so it is not “unweldable” — suitability still needs a qualified procedure and application review.
  • Machining: nickel-copper work-hardens; use rigid setups, positive feed, sharp tooling and appropriate coolant rather than rubbing.
  • Furnace cycles (solution / age) follow a grade/form/size-specific producer procedure — there is no single universal ageing recipe.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Monel 400 and K-500?

Both are nickel-copper alloys for seawater and HF-acid service. Monel 400 is a solid-solution alloy supplied annealed or cold-worked. K-500 adds aluminium and titanium and is precipitation-hardened (solution-treated and aged) for much higher strength and hardness and a low-magnetic response, at higher cost and with heat-treatment requirements.

What is Monel R-405?

R-405 (UNS N04405) is the free-machining version of 400: essentially the same nickel-copper composition with a controlled sulphur range (about 0.025–0.060%) added to improve machinability. It is chosen for high-volume machined parts; its mechanical and welding behaviour still need the grade’s own data and a qualified procedure rather than being assumed identical to 400.

Is Monel magnetic?

It depends on grade and temperature. Monel 400 is ferromagnetic near room temperature with a Curie point close to ambient, so its magnetic response is temperature-dependent — do not assume it is non-magnetic. Properly processed K-500 has low permeability and is used where an essentially non-magnetic, high-strength material is required.

Which standards apply to Monel 400 pipe versus K-500 bar?

They are separate. Monel 400 seamless pipe/tube is ASTM B165 (welded pipe B725, welded tube B730), with bar B164 and plate B127. K-500 bar, rod, wire, forgings and forging stock are covered by ASTM B865. K-500 is not automatically covered by the 400 pipe or plate specifications.

Can Monel K-500 welds reach full aged strength?

Not necessarily. K-500 weld metal may not develop the strength of aged base material, so joint performance must be treated explicitly with a qualified procedure, the correct filler and any specified post-weld treatment. Matching the family name does not guarantee aged-strength joints.

Is Monel suitable for seawater and hydrofluoric acid?

Nickel-copper alloys perform well in flowing seawater and in many HF-acid and reducing conditions, but suitability is condition-specific — it depends on velocity, aeration, crevices, deposits, HF concentration and water content. Stagnant or slow-moving seawater and oxidising contaminants need particular review, especially for high-strength aged K-500.

Does an MTC or PMI report prove sour-service suitability?

No. ISO 15156 / NACE MR0175 acceptance depends on the exact alloy, condition, hardness, processing and the environmental envelope. A mill certificate reports the heat and handheld PMI confirms major elements only; neither establishes environmental qualification, and aged K-500 in particular needs specific review.

Which federal specifications cover Monel?

Historically QQ-N-281 covers Monel 400 and QQ-N-286 covers age-hardenable K-500. These are legacy federal references whose current DLA status should be confirmed for the ordered product; we identify material primarily by UNS and the applicable ASTM/ASME specification.

What information is needed for a quotation?

Provide the grade and UNS, product form, standard and edition, condition (annealed / cold-worked / aged), dimensions and wall, quantity, service environment and temperature, required testing and inspection document, and delivery location. Availability and inspection scope are confirmed with the quotation.
