Nickel 200 / 201 Pipes, Fittings & Flanges Supplier
Nickel 200 & 201 — grade overview
Sagiant Piping Industries supports enquiries for commercially pure wrought nickel — Nickel 200 (UNS N02200) and its low-carbon variant Nickel 201 (UNS N02201) — in pipe, tube, fittings, flanges, bar and flat products. Both are ~99% nickel with excellent resistance to caustic soda and a range of chemical, food and electronics environments; 201 limits carbon to ≤0.02% to avoid graphite embrittlement at elevated temperature. Chlorine, acid and high-temperature suitability is service-specific — chemistry, condition, corrosion environment, strength and the governing design code all matter. Grade, product form, condition, testing and certification are confirmed with the quotation.
Nickel 200 / 201 chemistry, properties, standards and RFQ data
Both commercially pure nickel grades with chemistry, mechanical and physical reference data and product standards. Values carry a basis label (limiting composition / producer reference / specification); full current licensed acceptance tables were not available, so confirm the adopted ASTM edition, form and condition on the material certificate.
Technical Specification
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Product Forms | Seamless & welded pipe/tube, BW & forged fittings, flanges, bar, sheet/plate |
| Grades | Nickel 200 (N02200); Nickel 201 (N02201, low carbon, preferred above ~315°C) |
| Size Range | Pipe from 1/8" NPS; tube by OD × wall; bar and plate per product form — confirmed with quotation |
| Wall / Schedule / Class | Wall per adopted dimensional standard; flanges B16.5 — a class is a rating basis, not a psi value |
| Standards | ASTM B161 seamless pipe, B163 condenser tube, B725 welded pipe, B730 welded tube, B160 bar, B162 plate/sheet, B366 fittings, B564 forgings |
| Testing & Docs | Chemistry (with carbon by lab method), tensile, dimensional, examination, MTC EN 10204 3.1/3.2 — coordinated per scope |
Chemical Composition (wt %, limiting reference)
| Element | Nickel 200 | Nickel 201 |
|---|---|---|
| Nickel + cobalt, min | 99.0 | 99.0 |
| Carbon, max | 0.15 | 0.02 |
| Iron, max | 0.40 | 0.40 |
| Manganese, max | 0.35 | 0.35 |
| Silicon, max | 0.35 | 0.35 |
| Copper, max | 0.25 | 0.25 |
| Sulfur, max | 0.01 | 0.01 |
Limiting composition reference (producer basis) — not a statement that every current ASTM/ASME form was independently checked. The specified value is Nickel plus cobalt combined, minimum 99.0%. The only deliberate difference between the grades is the carbon maximum (0.15 vs 0.02%). Report the actual heat analysis and applicable acceptance basis on the certificate; a blank is "not specified", not zero.
Grade Identity & Cross-References
| Grade | UNS | Material-number cross-references | Distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nickel 200 | N02200 | 2.4060 / 2.4066 | Standard-carbon commercially pure wrought nickel. |
| Nickel 201 | N02201 | 2.4061 / 2.4068 | Low-carbon (≤0.02% C) variant for elevated-temperature service. |
Material numbers are cross-references, not unconditional "EN equivalents" — purchase to the specified standard, edition, form and condition. Matching a UNS or material number alone does not establish identical mechanical, inspection or dimensional requirements. Dual certification must satisfy both ordered grades' complete requirements, not merely the lower carbon maximum.
Mechanical Properties
| Grade | Tensile min MPa | Yield (Rp0.2) MPa | Elong. % | Condition / basis |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nickel 200 | 380 | 105 | 40 | ASTM B161 annealed reference (verify edition/form) |
| Nickel 201 | 345 | 80 | 40 | ASTM B161 annealed reference (verify edition/form) |
| Nickel 200 † | 370 | 100 | 40 | VDM soft-annealed, 20°C (DIN 17750 basis) |
| Nickel 201 † | 340 | 80 | 40 | VDM soft-annealed, 20°C (VdTÜV 345 basis) |
Values are reference data, not a universal acceptance table for every pipe, tube, forging, bar, sheet and fastener. Rows marked † are producer-published (VDM) on the stated European bases. Requirements differ by product standard (B161/B163/B725/B730/B160/B162), condition (annealed vs cold-worked/stress-relieved) and specimen/dimension — a hardness maximum applies only where a cited specification and condition support it, so no blanket "HB max" is shown. Tensile/yield are not design allowable stresses (those come from the applicable code).
Physical Properties (producer reference)
| Property | Nickel 200 | Nickel 201 | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Density | 8.9 g/cm³ | 8.9 g/cm³ | 20°C (8.89 rounded alt.) |
| Melting range | 1435–1445°C | 1435–1445°C | producer reference |
| Curie temperature | ≈ 360°C | ≈ 360°C | magnetic transition |
| Specific heat | 456 J/(kg·K) | 456 J/(kg·K) | 20°C |
| Electrical resistivity | 9 µΩ·cm | 9 µΩ·cm | 20°C |
| Elastic modulus | 205 GPa | 205 GPa | 20°C |
| Thermal conductivity | 71 W/(m·K) | 79 W/(m·K) | 20°C |
| Mean thermal expansion | 13.3 × 10⁻⁶/K | 13.3 × 10⁻⁶/K | 20–100°C |
Typical producer reference values (VDM), not specification acceptance limits. Both grades are ferromagnetic below the Curie transition (≈360°C). Use one documented dataset consistently with its temperatures/intervals; source rounding differences (e.g. 8.9 vs 8.89 density) are not specification conflicts.
Standards & Product Forms
| Product | Material specification | Separate dimensional / ordering basis |
|---|---|---|
| Seamless pipe / general seamless tube | ASTM B161 | Grade, condition, NPS or OD, wall, tolerance |
| Seamless condenser / heat-exchanger tube | ASTM B163 | OD × wall, length, straight/U-bent, tube tests |
| Welded pipe | ASTM B725 | Manufacture/condition, wall, examination |
| Welded tube | ASTM B730 | Annealed or stress-relieved route, OD × wall, tests |
| Rod / bar | ASTM B160 | Shape, diameter/section, condition, tolerance — not a wire or fastener spec |
| Plate / sheet / strip | ASTM B162 | Thickness × width × length, condition, finish |
| Wrought fittings | ASTM B366 | ASME B16.9; exact grade/class designation |
| Forgings / flanges | ASTM B564 | B16.5 flange dimensions; forging condition |
| Fasteners | Agreed component spec / drawing | Thread, dimensions, final condition — no automatic B7/B8 equivalence |
Material specification, dimensional standard, design code and inspection document serve different purposes — do not blend them. B161 (pipe) is distinct from B163/B730 (tube) and B725 (welded pipe); B160 is a bar specification, not a finished-fastener approval. Applicable general requirements (B829 seamless pipe/tube, B751 welded tube, B775 welded pipe, B906 flat products) apply only where the ordered specification invokes them. Confirm the contract edition rather than defaulting to the newest; ASTM "B" and ASME "SB" versions are checked separately.
Sizes, Schedules & Weight
| Concept | Correct treatment |
|---|---|
| Schedule / wall | Not a pressure rating. "Sch 5S–XXS" mixes B36.19 S schedules with other wall designations — list actual available combinations, not a continuous range. |
| B36.19 | A stainless-pipe dimensional standard; if its dimensions are ordered for nickel, it is an agreed dimensional reference, not nickel material certification. |
| Tube | Ordered by OD × wall (min/average-wall basis), not NPS/schedule. |
| Flange class | A class number is not a pressure in psi; ratings depend on material and temperature. |
| Theoretical weight | At 8.89 g/cm³, pipe mass ≈ 0.027929 × wall × (OD − wall) kg/m (nominal, mm) — geometry only, excludes tolerances. |
For dimensional data see the Pipe Schedule Chart. No wall thickness, flange class or grade alone establishes pressure suitability. Every advertised size/form combination is confirmed with the quotation.
Corrosion, Temperature & Service Selection
| Service | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Caustic soda / potash | A leading strength of nickel — but state concentration, operating/upset temperature, impurities, flow and stress; distinguish liquid handling from evaporation or molten service. |
| Chlorine / chlor-alkali | Dry chlorine performance does not establish suitability for wet (moist) chlorine or hypochlorite. Identify the actual process stream; moisture changes the assessment materially. |
| HF and other acids | Require concentration, water content, aeration, contaminants and temperature — no unconditional "resists HF and food acids". |
| Elevated temperature | Nickel 200 is generally restricted around 315°C due to graphitisation of its higher carbon; Nickel 201 (low carbon) is preferred above ~315°C. No single universal maximum service temperature is implied. |
| Contamination | Consider sulphur and carbon exposure and process impurities in both selection and fabrication. |
Welding, Fabrication & Verification
| Item | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Welding | Use qualified procedures/personnel where the code requires; ERNi-1 (Nickel Filler Metal 61) is an established consumable reference, but filler need not exactly match parent chemistry — select for joint, process and service. Keep joints clean (nickel is sensitive to sulphur/lead). |
| Forming / machining | These grades work-harden; plan for intermediate annealing, higher forces, springback and appropriate tooling. |
| Condition | State the ordered annealed/cold-worked condition and how later forming or welding affects final acceptance — mill delivery condition is separate from fabrication. |
| Carbon verification | Handheld XRF does not measure carbon, so it cannot distinguish Nickel 200 from low-carbon 201 on its own. Use traceable certification and a validated carbon-analysis method when the distinction must be verified. |
| Documents | Specify EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 at order stage — they are different validation arrangements, not interchangeable labels; 3.2 needs the required inspection arrangement in place. |
Applications
Emphasis on caustic handling and process equipment, selected chemical-contact components, electrical components and selected food/synthetic-fibre equipment. These are candidate uses — the actual component and medium (and hygiene/regulatory compliance where relevant) must be confirmed. Provide normal and upset temperature, concentration, impurities, pressure, service life and design code in the RFQ.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do Nickel 200 and 201 differ?
They share the same nominal ~99% nickel composition; the deliberate difference is carbon — 0.15% max for 200 versus 0.02% max for 201. The low carbon of 201 avoids graphite embrittlement, so it is preferred above about 315°C. Selection also depends on product form and service requirements.
Can 201 replace 200?
Only after confirming the complete ordered requirements. Lower carbon alone does not prove substitution or dual certification — a dual-certified item must meet both grades' full requirements.
Can these grades handle chlorine or HF?
There is no unconditional answer. Dry chlorine is very different from wet chlorine; HF and acid service depend on concentration, water content, aeration, contaminants and temperature. Each case needs a service-specific corrosion review.
Does XRF distinguish Nickel 200 from 201?
No. Handheld XRF cannot measure carbon, which is the only element that separates the two grades. Use the certificate and a validated carbon-analysis method when verification is required.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do Nickel 200 and 201 differ?
They share the same nominal ~99% nickel (plus cobalt) composition; the deliberate difference is the carbon maximum — 0.15% for 200 versus 0.02% for 201. The low carbon of 201 prevents graphite embrittlement, so it is preferred above about 315°C. Selection also depends on the product form and service requirements.
Can Nickel 201 replace Nickel 200?
Only after confirming the complete ordered requirements. The lower carbon of 201 alone does not prove substitution or dual certification — a dual-certified item must satisfy both grades' full chemistry, mechanical, inspection and dimensional requirements.
Which standard covers pipe versus heat-exchanger tube?
Seamless pipe is ASTM B161 and welded pipe is B725, while condenser/heat-exchanger tube is B163 (seamless) and B730 (welded). Pipe and tube are ordered differently (NPS/schedule versus OD × wall) and are not interchangeable.
Are these grades magnetic?
Yes. Commercially pure nickel is ferromagnetic at room temperature and loses ferromagnetism above its Curie transition of about 360°C. Do not assume nickel is non-magnetic.
Can Nickel 200/201 handle chlorine or hydrofluoric acid?
There is no unconditional answer. Dry chlorine performance does not establish suitability for wet (moist) chlorine or hypochlorite, and HF/acid service depends on concentration, water content, aeration, contaminants and temperature. Each case needs a service-specific corrosion review.
Does XRF distinguish the two grades?
No. Handheld XRF cannot measure carbon, which is the only element that separates Nickel 200 from low-carbon 201. Use the material certificate and a validated carbon-analysis method when the distinction must be verified.
What temperature can Nickel 200/201 withstand?
Nickel 200 is generally restricted to around 315°C because its higher carbon can graphitise; low-carbon Nickel 201 is preferred above that. There is no single universal maximum — corrosion, strength and the governing design code all set limits for the actual service.
Which documents and tests are available?
Chemistry (with carbon by laboratory method), tensile testing, dimensional checks, examination and traceable certification are coordinated per the order. Specify the EN 10204 document type (3.1 or 3.2) and any supplementary tests at ordering — 3.2 requires the agreed inspection arrangement.
Which sizes are stocked?
Availability is confirmed per enquiry rather than implied as a continuous range. Share the grade, product form, dimensions and standard, and we confirm stock, sourcing or made-to-order supply with the quotation.
What is needed for a quotation?
Provide the grade/UNS (200 or 201), product form, specification and edition, condition, dimensions, quantity, service environment and temperature, required testing and inspection document, and delivery location. Availability and inspection scope are confirmed with the quotation.
