Manufacturing Process & Process Notes

Machine shafts are machined from cold-finished or forged bar by turning, then heat treated (quench-and-temper, induction or case hardening, or nitriding) to the required core and surface hardness, and finish ground/polished to drawing tolerance. Keyways, splines, threads and shoulders are cut to specification and inspected.

Frequently Asked Questions

What materials are machine shafts made from?

Carbon (1045), alloy (4140/4340/EN19/EN24), stainless (304/316/410/431/17-4PH), duplex and nickel alloys — selected for strength, wear and corrosion needs.

What tolerance can you hold on shafts?

Ground shafts are typically held to h6–h9 per drawing; tighter tolerances and surface finishes are available on request.

Can shafts be heat-treated and hardened?

Yes — quench-and-temper for core strength, plus induction/case hardening or nitriding for wear-resistant surfaces, certified by hardness testing.

Do you machine keyways and splines?

Yes — keyways, splines, threads, shoulders and bores are machined to the supplied drawing and dimensionally inspected.

Scope of Work

The machine shafts scope can include project review, fabrication support, dimensional coordination, inspection documentation and dispatch support for industrial installations.

Applications

  • Oil & gas, refinery, petrochemical and process plants
  • Power, boiler, heat exchanger, water and utility systems
  • EPC projects, OEM fabrication, maintenance shutdowns and infrastructure works
