Basic Description

Sagiant Piping Industries supports enquiries for INCONEL alloy pipes, tubes, butt weld fittings, forged fittings, flanges, bars and other specified product forms. Core grades include 600, 601, 625, 718 and X-750, with wider family grades available to order. Grades should be compared by composition, supply condition (annealed, solution-annealed or precipitation-hardened), applicable ASTM/ASME standard and service environment before selection. Availability, inspection scope and documentation (EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2) are confirmed against each enquiry. INCONEL is a registered trademark of Special Metals Corporation; Sagiant Piping Industries is an independent supplier and stockist, not the alloy producer. Alloy 825 is an INCOLOY (iron-nickel-chromium) grade, not an INCONEL grade — see the Incoloy Alloys page.

Producer reference limits (Special Metals bulletins); “bal/rem” denotes balance and is not a fixed value. Unlisted elements are not guaranteed zero. The 718 limits are on an AMS basis and 690 has additional nuclear restrictions. These are not independently verified current limits for every ASTM/AMS product — the purchase specification edition and heat certificate control acceptance. Measured certificate values are results, not the limits themselves.

Complete coverage of the current Special Metals INCONEL bulletin index; not a claim to list every historical alloy, melt or welding consumable. UNS cross-references are not substitution approvals — match the exact specification, revision, chemistry, form, condition and inspection. Specialised variants (706 / N09706, 625LCF, 718SPF) exist in producer literature and are confirmed by specification on enquiry. Alloys 800/800H/800HT, 825 and 925 are INCOLOY, not INCONEL.

These are producer typical/composite room-temperature ranges, not guaranteed acceptance limits — the 625 bulletin states its ranges are not suitable for specification purposes. Values depend on product, size, orientation, condition and full heat-treatment designation. ASTM B444 defines N06625 Grade 1 (annealed) and Grade 2 (solution-annealed) as supply conditions, not different UNS alloys. For 718 keep solution-treated, aerospace precipitation-hardened and oil-tool tables separate; do not combine aerospace tensile minima with oilfield hardness limits. Elevated-temperature, creep/rupture, fatigue, hardness and grain-size requirements are taken from the ordered specification and confirmed on the certificate.

Producer reference values, typical near ambient. Melting ranges are not service temperatures. Use the grade-specific density in the weight calculator, not one generic value. Thermal conductivity, specific heat, resistivity, modulus, thermal-expansion coefficient (with its temperature interval) and magnetic permeability are provided per grade on enquiry; for high-temperature service, temperature-dependent source tables apply rather than a single ambient figure. Example (600, ~20°C): conductivity 14.9 W/(m·K), resistivity 1.03 µΩ·m, specific heat 444 J/(kg·K), Young’s modulus 214 GPa.

A routing matrix for specification review, not a universal certification. Where invoked, general-requirement standards B829 (seamless tubular), B751 (welded tube), B775 (welded pipe) and B906 (flat) also apply. ASTM and ASME SB adoption editions are not automatically identical. Construction codes (B31.3 / B31.1 / BPVC) define pressure design; a material standard does not by itself establish pressure suitability.

Available Forms, Sizes & Availability

Availability is confirmed per enquiry with stocked / sourced / made-to-order status — the ranges below are indicative, not a statement that every grade is held in every size, schedule and condition.

FormSize rangeWall / thickness / ratingDimensional / material route
Seamless pipe1/8" – 24" NPS (DN 6–600)Specified schedule / wall; S schedules and XXS are not one continuous seriesB36.10M dims; B167 / B444 material

Class 2500 is a flange pressure class, not “2500 psi”, and B16.5 Class 2500 extends only to NPS 12. Keep dimensional standards (B36.10 / B36.19) separate from material specifications. Theoretical weights use grade-specific density; see the schedule chart and weight calculator.

Corrosion & Temperature Selection

  • Separate oxidation/scale resistance from mechanical (creep) life, strength and code-allowable stress — these set different limits for the same grade.
  • 600 vs 625: 625 adds Mo+Nb for higher strength and broad acid/chloride/pitting resistance; 600 suits oxidising heat service. Neither is immune to every chloride mechanism.
  • 601 / 617 / 693 / HX / 230: selection is driven by furnace atmosphere, thermal cycling and carburisation / metal-dusting / sulfidation with stress.
  • 625 / 686 / 22 / C-276 / G-3: aqueous corrosion depends on species, concentration, temperature, aeration, chlorides, contaminants, crevices and weld condition — confirm with corrosion data.
  • 718 / 725 / X-750 / 751 / 783: chosen for strength / relaxation / fatigue in a defined heat-treatment; they are not interchangeable corrosion-piping choices.
  • Sour service: ISO 15156-3 / NACE MR0175 addresses selection and qualification of corrosion-resistant alloys (condition, cold work, ageing, hardness). The grade name alone is not “NACE approved”, and an MTC/PMI report does not establish sour-service suitability.

Do not present a melting range or an oxidation-test temperature as the maximum operating temperature of a pressure component. High-temperature life also depends on exposure duration, creep/rupture, thermal fatigue and stability.

Welding, Fabrication & Machining

  • Clean and control contamination before heating/welding; use dedicated clean tools and suitable consumables.
  • Use a qualified WPS/PQR and welders where applicable; joint prep, shielding, filler, heat input, interpass and post-weld examination per procedure.
  • Filler is chosen by grade, joint, corrosion and strength — an over-alloyed filler is often preferred for corrosion and dissimilar joints. ERNiCrMo-3 is a common consumable example for 625, subject to process/service qualification; a matching parent-alloy name does not prove weld performance.
  • Solid-solution grades usually need no PWHT; precipitation-hardening grades require their specified solution-and-age treatment — there is no single heat-treatment cycle for all grades.
  • Machining: distinguish cutting speed, feed, tool engagement and coolant; avoid rubbing and work hardening with rigid setups and positive engagement rather than simply “slow feeds”.

Testing & Documentation

ItemBasis
Heat chemistry (with C)Laboratory analysis; handheld PMI/XRF confirms major elements only and cannot measure carbon or verify heat treatment
Tensile / proof / elongationPer ordered specification, product and condition
HardnessWhere required — state scale, condition and acceptance

NDE / hydro / dimensionalPer specification and product form
CertificationEN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 (3.2 requires the agreed inspection arrangement); traceability by heat

PMI confirms major alloying elements; it does not establish heat treatment, mechanical compliance or light/residual elements (carbon, nitrogen, boron), which need laboratory analysis and records. Specify supplementary tests and the certificate type at ordering.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Inconel, and how does it differ from Incoloy?

INCONEL and INCOLOY are Special Metals trademarks, not single specifications. INCONEL grades are nickel-based (nickel is the majority element), while INCOLOY grades such as 800/825 are iron-nickel-chromium with high nickel. Alloy 825 is an INCOLOY grade and is covered on the Incoloy Alloys page — always identify the exact alloy and UNS number rather than the brand name alone.

How do 600, 601 and 625 differ?

600 is a Ni-Cr-Fe alloy for heat and oxidation resistance; 601 adds chromium and aluminium for stronger high-temperature oxidation resistance; 625 adds molybdenum and niobium for much higher strength and broad acid, chloride and pitting resistance. They are selected for different service, and none is immune to every corrosion mechanism.

Is Inconel 718 interchangeable with 625?

No. 718 is precipitation-hardened (solution-treated and aged) for very high strength, while 625 is a solid-solution corrosion-resistant alloy. They differ in strengthening mechanism, condition, specification and cost, and are chosen for different duties.

What is alloy 625 Grade 1 versus Grade 2?

ASTM B444 distinguishes N06625 Grade 1 (annealed) and Grade 2 (solution-annealed), with different mechanical properties and intended service (Grade 2 for higher-temperature / creep use). These are supply-condition grades of the same UNS alloy, not different alloy numbers, and are not interchangeable — specify which grade is required.

Which grades and product forms are actually stocked?

Availability is confirmed per enquiry rather than implied as a continuous range. Core grades (600, 601, 625, 718, X-750) and wider family grades are offered as stocked, sourced or made-to-order depending on the grade, form, size and condition. Share the requirement and we confirm status with the quotation.

Does an MTC or PMI report prove sour-service suitability?

No. Sour-service acceptance to ISO 15156-3 / NACE MR0175 depends on the specific environment, material condition, cold work, ageing and hardness qualified to the standard. An MTC reports the heat, and handheld PMI confirms major elements only; neither establishes environmental qualification.

What temperature can an Inconel component withstand?

There is no single universal maximum. Oxidation resistance, mechanical/creep strength, corrosion and the governing design code each set different limits for the actual service, and exposure time matters. A melting range or an oxidation-test temperature is not the operating limit of a pressure component.

Which pipe and tube standards apply?

They are separate by grade and form — for example 600 seamless pipe is B167 (welded B517), while 625 seamless pipe/tube is B444 with welded pipe B705 and welded tube B704. Pipe (NPS/schedule) and tube (OD × wall) are ordered differently and are not interchangeable.

How are welding fillers and heat treatment selected?

By a qualified procedure. Filler is chosen for the alloy, joint, corrosion and strength needs — often over-alloyed for corrosion or dissimilar joints — and is not simply the matching parent-alloy name. Solid-solution grades usually need no PWHT; precipitation-hardening grades require their specified solution-and-age treatment.

What information is needed for a quotation?

Provide the alloy and UNS, product form, standard and edition, condition (annealed / solution-annealed / aged), dimensions, quantity, service environment and temperature, required testing (chemistry, corrosion method/acceptance, NDE), inspection document and delivery location. Availability and inspection scope are confirmed with the quotation.
