How it is made
Forgings are open- or closed-die forged from bar or billet, then heat treated to the grade requirement — carbon A105 as-forged or normalised; low-temp A350 normalised (and tempered) with Charpy testing; Cr-Mo A182 F-grades normalised & tempered; austenitic stainless solution annealed; duplex solution annealed and rapidly cooled. Branch outlets are forged to MSS SP-97, with the branch end machined for a butt-weld (ASME B16.25), socket-weld or NPT-threaded (ASME B1.20.1) connection; the outlet is joined to the run pipe by a qualified full-penetration weld, separate from the branch-end joint. Class denotes a branch-end rating basis, not a pressure in psi.

Frequently asked questions
What is a branch outlet (olet) fitting?
It is an integrally reinforced fitting that forms a branch connection from a run (header) pipe to a smaller branch, with a butt-weld, socket-weld or threaded branch end. “Weldolet”, “Sockolet”, “Thredolet” and similar are manufacturer trademarks; we describe the generic type and identify a verified brand where relevant, without implying we manufacture another company’s branded product.
Does a “self-reinforced” outlet remove the need for design checks?
No. Integral reinforcement reduces the need for a separate reinforcement pad, but the fitting must still be suitable for the actual run pipe, branch, wall, material and design conditions, and the branch connection is still assessed for pressure, external loads and fatigue. MSS SP-97 does not specify an outlet-body wall-thickness tolerance, and the pipe −12.5% allowance is not applied to the fitting; the qualified manufacturer drawing governs the body dimensions.
How is the outlet attached to the run pipe?
By a qualified full-penetration branch weld to the run pipe, made to the applicable piping code and a qualified WPS after correct opening preparation and fit-up — not a fillet-only weld. That run attachment is separate from joining the branch end, which is butt-welded, socket-welded or threaded depending on the outlet type. This page does not supply a hot-tap procedure or authorization.
Which standard applies, and does it cover every outlet type?
MSS SP-97 covers 90° and 45° integrally reinforced forged branch outlets with butt-weld, socket-weld or threaded ends, within its edition’s dimensional and class scope. It does not automatically certify every proprietary elbow, sweep, nipple or flanged design, and ASME B16.11 classes are not transferred to SP-97 automatically — each class and special product is verified against the outlet standard and the manufacturer’s qualified design.
Does a branch range to 24″ mean any run pairs with any branch?
No. Only the run / branch combinations actually qualified by the manufacturer’s design are supplied — a branch size being available does not mean every run from 1/2″ upward is compatible with it, and run-size consolidation groups come from the qualified design rather than an assumption. We confirm the exact qualified run / branch / angle / wall / class combination per order.
Are the material grades and mechanical values the same as pipe fittings?
No — outlet bodies are forgings (A105, A350, A182, B564 / B462), so their acceptance properties come from the forging specification, not the A234 / A403 pipe-fitting grades. F44 is a 6Mo austenitic (not a duplex) and A105N is the normalized condition of A105 (not a separate grade); each grade, class and condition is confirmed per order.
What information is needed for a quotation?
Provide the outlet type and angle, the run and branch OD and wall, the material grade / class / condition, the service and design code, the end type, the applicable standard edition, required tests and certification, quantity and any drawing. Availability by type, size and grade is confirmed with the quotation.
