Austenitic and 400-series rows are ASTM A240 / producer product limits; rows marked † and 254 SMO are producer nominal chemistries shown for comparison. Iron is balance. S31803 is not automatically S32205 (S31803 permits Cr 21–23, Mo 2.5–3.5, N 0.08–0.20). For 347, "Cb" is columbium — the historical name for niobium. Final chemistry is confirmed on the heat-wise MTC (EN 10204 3.1).

Flat-product minima follow ASTM A240; duplex values are producer solution-annealed references for stated wall ranges — never merge the two bases. Precipitation-hardening grades are condition-dependent: 17-4PH in H900 reaches roughly UTS ≥ 1310 MPa, 0.2% yield ≥ 1172 MPa, elongation ≥ 5% at 40–47 HRC; other conditions (H1075, H1150) differ. Always specify the final heat-treatment condition.

Corrosion & Temperature Selection

ServiceGuidance
Chlorides & seawater316/316L improves on 304 through molybdenum but is not seawater-proof; high-chloride duty typically moves to 6Mo (254 SMO), super duplex (2507 / S32760) or qualified duplex.
Acids & process chemicals316L, 317L, 904L and 6Mo selected by acid type, concentration, impurities, temperature and aeration — not simply by higher alloy content. PREN is a comparative index, not a lifetime guarantee.
High-temperature & cryogenicNo universal maximum temperature — separate oxidation resistance (309S, 310S, 314) from code allowable stress, creep and time. H and stabilised grades serve pressure duty; austenitics offer good cryogenic toughness subject to code rules.
Sour serviceDistinguish NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 (H₂S production) from MR0103 / ISO 17945 (refining); qualification is service-, condition-, hardness- and grade-dependent.

Welding, Forming & Surface Treatment

Family / stepGuidance
Austenitic 304/316Generally weldable with a qualified procedure; L variants reduce sensitisation. Manage distortion, work hardening, shielding/back purge and heat-tint removal.
Duplex & super duplexControl heat input, interpass temperature, cooling and filler to keep the ferrite/austenite balance; qualify with the applicable phase and corrosion tests.
Ferritic, martensitic & PHGrade-specific rules — grain growth (ferritic), hydrogen-cracking risk and preheat/PWHT (martensitic), condition control (PH). Not a family-wide "excellent weldability" claim.
Surface treatmentHeat-tint/scale removal (pickling/descaling, ASTM A380) and passivation (A967) are related but different operations. Distinguish mill finishes (2B, 2R) from measured Ra.
Free-machining 303/416Machine well through sulphur additions but have reduced weldability and can show lower corrosion resistance — not routine substitutes in welded service.

Testing, Traceability & Documentation

ItemWhat to specify / know
MTC / traceabilityHeat identity on the certificate must match product markings; distinguish heat analysis from product analysis.
EN 10204 3.1 vs 3.23.1 is validated by the manufacturer's authorised representative; 3.2 adds validation by a purchaser- or regulation-designated inspector — agree the plan before supply.
PMISpecify method and elements. Handheld XRF cannot measure carbon, so it alone cannot distinguish standard-carbon from "L" grades.
IGC / duplex phaseASTM A262 (austenitic) is a family of practices; A923 / A1084 for duplex where specified — state method and grade coverage.
Pitting & hydro/NDEG48 or agreed pitting test needs method, temperature and acceptance; hydro/NDE follow the ordered product specification and class.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between 304 and 316 stainless steel?

316 normally contains specified molybdenum additions that improve resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion relative to 304 in many chloride environments. Neither is universally suitable for seawater or every chemical — selection depends on temperature, concentration, crevices and cleaning conditions.

When should I specify 304L or 316L?

The low-carbon variants limit carbon to 0.030% maximum under common specifications and reduce weld-related sensitisation. They do not eliminate all corrosion mechanisms, so use the exact product specification and required mechanical properties.

Is Schedule 40S the same as Schedule 40?

Not at every size. The S-series belongs to ASME B36.19M; other walls may be ordered to B36.10M. Compare the actual OD and wall for the required NPS — a schedule number is a wall designation, not a pressure rating.

Can PMI confirm 304L or 316L?

Handheld XRF does not establish carbon content, so it cannot by itself distinguish standard-carbon from L grades. Require the MTC and a method capable of measuring the necessary elements when verification is specified.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between 304 and 316 stainless steel?

316 normally contains specified molybdenum additions that improve resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion relative to 304 in many chloride environments. Neither grade is universally suitable for seawater or every chemical — selection depends on temperature, concentration, crevices, flow and cleaning conditions.

When should I specify 304L or 316L?

The low-carbon variants limit carbon to 0.030% maximum under common product specifications and reduce susceptibility to weld-related sensitisation. They do not eliminate all corrosion mechanisms, so use the exact product specification and required mechanical properties.

Are 304 and 304L, or 316 and 316L, interchangeable?

Not automatically. Material may be dual certified only when it satisfies all requirements of both ordered designations. A low-carbon chemistry result alone does not establish dual certification or high-temperature suitability.

Are EN and UNS grades exact equivalents?

Cross-reference tables are selection aids. Chemistry, mechanical properties, delivery condition, product scope and testing may differ, so substitution requires a documented comparison and purchaser or design approval.

Is Schedule 40S the same as Schedule 40?

Not at every size. The S-series belongs to ASME B36.19M; other dimensions may be ordered to B36.10M. Compare the actual OD and wall for the required NPS. A schedule number is a wall designation, not a pressure rating.

What is the difference between pipe and tube?

Pipe is commonly ordered by NPS and schedule; tube is commonly ordered by actual OD and wall thickness. Their applicable standards, tolerances and tests differ.

Which stainless steel is suitable for high temperatures?

Selection must consider oxidation, creep strength, allowable stresses, exposure duration and atmosphere. H grades, stabilised grades and heat-resistant grades serve different purposes; a producer oxidation-temperature figure is not a pressure-design limit.

Can PMI confirm 304L or 316L?

The test method matters. Handheld XRF does not establish carbon content, so it cannot by itself distinguish standard-carbon from L grades. Require the MTC and a method capable of measuring the necessary elements when verification is specified.

Can Sagiant provide inspection documents and special testing?

Specify the EN 10204 document type, traceability, PMI method, inspection hold points and special tests with the enquiry. The quotation confirms the agreed document and inspection scope based on the material, standard and project.

What information should I include in an RFQ?

State product form, standard and edition, grade/UNS, dimensions, quantity or length, condition/finish, ends or flange details, design service, certification, testing and delivery location. For tube add OD and wall basis; for flanges add class, facing and applicable series.
