How it is made

Bars are hot-rolled or forged from bloom/billet, then optionally cold-finished — cold-drawn, centreless-ground or turned/peeled — for close tolerance (h9/h11) and a bright surface. Stainless is solution annealed and pickled; free-machining 303 has controlled sulphur for machinability; alloy steels are quenched & tempered to the required condition. Because carbon and alloy bar mechanicals depend on the heat-treatment condition and section size, those values are given as typical for the condition and confirmed on the MTC; stainless and duplex bar carry the ASTM A276/A479 specification minima.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions

What are flat bars used for?

Supports, brackets, base frames, ladder rungs and general fabrication where a flat rectangular section is needed.

What sizes and grades?

A range of width×thickness combinations in stainless, duplex, alloy and carbon, cut to length.

Hot-rolled or bright?

Flat bar is usually hot-rolled; bright (cold-finished) flats are available where tolerance and finish matter.
