Basic Description

Sagiant Piping Industries supports enquiries for Alloy 20 (UNS N08020; also known as Carpenter 20 / 20Cb-3 and INCOLOY 020) as pipe, tube, buttweld and forged fittings, flanges, bars, sheet/plate and fasteners. This niobium-stabilised iron-nickel-chromium-molybdenum-copper alloy was developed for sulphuric acid service, with good resistance across a range of acid concentrations and a recognised advantage in chloride stress-corrosion cracking — performance still depends on concentration, temperature, aeration and weld condition. Several long-standing ASTM product standards (B464/B468 welded pipe/tube, B729 seamless, B473 bar, B463 flat) have been withdrawn and N08020 is migrating into A-series routes, so the accepted current specification and edition are confirmed per order alongside EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 documentation. Sagiant is an independent supplier and stockist, not the alloy producer.

Technical Specification

ParameterSpecification
MaterialAlloy 20 (UNS N08020, W.-Nr. 2.4660) — niobium-stabilised Ni-Fe-Cr-Mo-Cu alloy; a single wrought grade, not a family of interchangeable grades
Product FormsSeamless & welded pipe/tube, buttweld & forged fittings, flanges, bars, sheet/plate/strip, wire and fasteners — per grade/form availability
Supply ConditionSolution-annealed (stabilisation-preserving); cold-worked where specified — Alloy 20 is strengthened by cold work, not precipitation hardening
StandardsHistorically the ASTM B-series (several now withdrawn) with migration into A-series routes — see Standards & Status; confirm the ordered edition and accepted route
Testing & DocsHeat chemistry, tensile, hardness, intergranular corrosion (ASTM A262 / G28 as ordered), PMI, NDE per order; MTC EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2

“Carpenter 20 / 20Cb-3” and “INCOLOY 020” are producer designations for material to UNS N08020; Sagiant Piping Industries is an independent supplier and stockist, not the alloy producer. Identify the exact specification edition, condition and any producer requirement on enquiry.

Limiting composition from the INCOLOY 020 producer bulletin (a sourced reference, not the declared requirement for every purchase standard). “Columbium (Cb)” is the older name for niobium; the Nb+Ta stabilisation rule is 8×C minimum (e.g. at C=0.05%, that is 0.40%) and does not waive other limits. Some producers publish tighter values — for example Carpenter’s type analysis lists C 0.06 max, P 0.035 max and Ni 32.50–35.00 — so source-specific limits are kept separate and never combined into an invented universal grade. The heat/product certificate and ordered specification edition control acceptance.

Designations & Related Materials

Carpenter 20Cb-3 / CarTech 20Cb-3Producer trademark for N08020 — not every generic N08020 item is Carpenter-made
INCOLOY alloy 020Special Metals producer designation for N08020 (not a separate chemistry row)
VDM Alloy 20 / Nicrofer 3620 NbProducer designation; source-specific chemistry/processing
20Mo-4 (N08024) / 20Mo-6 (N08026)Related modified alloys — distinct UNS, not aliases of N08020
CN7MCast counterpart — separate casting standard, chemistry and properties; not an unconditional equivalent of wrought N08020
ER320 / ER320LRWelding consumables, not wrought base-metal grades

The same UNS number does not prove identical producer limits, form, heat treatment, examination or code acceptance. Designations are cross-references and related materials, not substitution approvals or stocked coverage; no arbitrary “Alloy 20L/20H” rows are added without a recognised specification.

Mechanical Properties (annealed reference)

Property (annealed)Value
Tensile strength≥551 MPa (80 ksi)
0.2% proof stress≥241 MPa (35 ksi)
Elongation≥30%
Hardness≤95 HRB (typical annealed)

Indicative annealed values; the exact figures depend on product form, size, condition and the governing specification edition, and typical data are separate from contractual minima. Confirm form (pipe/tube, plate/sheet, bar, forgings, wire, fasteners), size interval, condition (annealed / cold-worked) and test basis on the certificate. Cold-worked strength is higher than the annealed delivery minimum; elevated-temperature, impact, fatigue and creep data are supplied where relevant with their conditions. Pressure-code allowable stresses reference the code, edition, form and temperature — not tensile strength.

Physical Properties

Density~8.05 g/cm³ (producer reference)
Melting range~1425–1445°C (approx.)
Young’s modulus~193 GPa (~28 ×10⁶ psi)
Magnetic responseAustenitic; low permeability (annealed)

Producer reference values near ambient; the melting range is not a service temperature. Specific heat, thermal conductivity, mean thermal-expansion coefficient (with its interval), electrical resistivity and permeability with temperature/condition are provided on enquiry, with measured and calculated data identified. Use the grade-specific density in the weight calculator.

Standards & Status

B462 — forgingsActive standardIts current published scope may omit N08020 — confirm inclusion rather than assume; A182 is a candidate route
B366 — wrought fittingsVerify grade/class/editionA403 is a candidate route; a general fitting standard does not cover every form/route

Legacy references are retained for existing drawings, replacement parts and historical MTCs, clearly labelled. Withdrawal does not automatically invalidate previously certified stock, and ASTM status does not by itself determine an ASME SB adoption or an existing design code. A-series routes are verification candidates, not an approved substitution table — check exact grade inclusion, class, heat treatment, tests and project acceptance in the ordered edition; do not silently change a purchase specification. Rename “equivalents” as designation cross-references.

Available Forms, Sizes & Availability

Availability is confirmed per enquiry with stocked / sourced / made-to-order status — the ranges below are indicative, not a statement that every size, schedule and form is held.

FormSize range (indicative)Wall / thickness / ratingRoute
Seamless pipe1/8" – 12" NPSSpecified schedule / wall; S schedules and STD/XS/XXS are not one continuous seriesB36.10M dims; N08020 material (verify current spec)

The introductory ~18" welded and 12" seamless figures are route-dependent, not a contradiction. Class is a flange pressure class, not psi. Keep dimensional standards (B36.10 / B36.19) separate from material qualification; mark undefined size/schedule combinations rather than interpolate. See the schedule chart and weight calculator.

Corrosion & Temperature

  • Alloy 20 was developed for sulphuric acid service; copper and molybdenum give good resistance across a range of concentrations, but performance depends on concentration, temperature, aeration, impurities, velocity and weld condition — not “all concentrations at any temperature”. Confirm with a concentration–temperature corrosion map for the actual fluid.
  • Its resistance to chloride stress-corrosion cracking is a recognised advantage over standard austenitic stainless steels; producer statements about 20–40% sulphuric acid specifically concern SCC and should not be read as an unrestricted general-corrosion guarantee.
  • Niobium stabilisation reduces susceptibility to intergranular attack by tying up carbon; it does not guarantee zero carbide precipitation or full intergranular resistance after every thermal cycle. Welding, cold work, heat treatment and sensitisation history still matter.
  • Also assess phosphoric and mixed acids, chloride pitting/crevices, oxidising vs reducing conditions, deposits and galvanic coupling. Publish corrosion rates only with medium, concentration, temperature, aeration, duration and specimen/weld condition.
  • Separate aqueous-corrosion limits from mechanical/code limits and from heat-treatment temperatures; a producer’s elevated-temperature application note is not an acid-service limit, and any sour-service claim needs the applicable standard, condition and environment.

Heat Treatment, Welding & Fabrication

  • Use the specification/producer stabilisation-preserving annealing procedure — not a generic ~1150°C anneal. Annealing near ~1149°C can sacrifice stabilisation (with restrictions on later welding/heating); some producers specify soft/stabilising annealing around 920–960°C with section-dependent cooling. The correct temperature, time and cooling are source- and form-specific.
  • Alloy 20 is strengthened by cold work, not by a precipitation-hardening treatment.
  • Welding: ER320LR is a common filler example, but filler and process (TIG/MIG/SMAW) are selected by joint, dilution and service — an over-alloyed filler may be preferred, so “matching filler only” is not a universal rule. Control cleanliness, shielding, heat input/interpass, dissimilar joints and post-weld condition, and qualify the procedure.
  • Fabrication: the alloy work-hardens more than standard stainless; control hot/cold forming, intermediate annealing, machining (tooling/coolant), oxide removal/pickling and contamination prevention per a qualified procedure.

Testing & Documentation

ItemBasis
Heat chemistryLaboratory analysis; handheld PMI confirms major elements only — not a substitute for full analysis or proof of heat treatment
Intergranular corrosionASTM A262 or G28 — state the actual practice/method, specimen condition, duration and acceptance; alloy-applicability specific, not a field-performance guarantee
Tensile / hardnessPer ordered specification, form and condition
NDE / hydro / dimensionalPer specification and product form
CertificationEN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 (3.2 needs the agreed independent validation; not every listed test is automatically included)

IGC, PMI and certificates confirm what each test covers; they do not by themselves guarantee performance in every process environment. Specify supplementary tests, corrosion method/acceptance and certificate type at ordering.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Alloy 20 the same as Carpenter 20 and 20Cb-3?

They refer to the same UNS N08020 material. “Carpenter 20 / 20Cb-3 / CarTech 20Cb-3” and “INCOLOY 020” are producer designations for that grade. We identify material by UNS N08020 and the applicable specification; a branded name does not mean every generic N08020 item was made by that producer, and related modified alloys such as 20Mo-4 (N08024) and 20Mo-6 (N08026) are distinct grades, not aliases.

Which ASTM standards still apply to Alloy 20?

Several long-standing N08020 product standards have been withdrawn — B464 and B468 (welded pipe/tube, 2025) and B729, B473 and B463 (seamless pipe/tube, bar/wire, flat products, 2026) — and N08020 has been migrating into A-series specifications. The current route (for example A312/A358, A213/A249, A240, A182 or A403 by exact grade and class) must be confirmed for each order; legacy references are kept, clearly labelled, for existing drawings and certificates.

What annealing temperature does Alloy 20 need?

Not a generic ~1150°C anneal. Alloy 20 needs a stabilisation-preserving annealing procedure from the producer or specification — annealing near ~1149°C can sacrifice niobium stabilisation, and some producers specify soft/stabilising annealing around 920–960°C with section-dependent cooling. The exact temperature, time and cooling are source- and form-specific.

Does niobium stabilisation make Alloy 20 immune to intergranular attack?

No. Niobium ties up carbon and reduces susceptibility to sensitisation and intergranular attack, but it does not guarantee zero carbide precipitation or full intergranular resistance after every thermal cycle. Welding, cold work, heat treatment and sensitisation history still matter, and welded material should be qualified for the service.

How does Alloy 20 perform in sulphuric acid?

It was developed for sulphuric acid and resists a wide range of concentrations, but performance depends on concentration, temperature, aeration, impurities, velocity and weld condition — it is confirmed against a concentration–temperature corrosion map for the actual fluid, not treated as suitable at all concentrations and temperatures. Its chloride stress-corrosion-cracking resistance is a recognised advantage over standard austenitic stainless steels.

What is the difference between EN 10204 3.1 and 3.2 certificates?

A 3.1 certificate is validated by the manufacturer’s authorised inspection representative; a 3.2 additionally requires validation by an independent (third-party or customer) inspector under an agreed arrangement. Neither automatically includes every optional test — specify the required tests and the certificate type at ordering.

What information is needed for a quotation?

Provide the product form, dimensions and tolerances, quantity, condition (annealed / cold-worked), the exact specification and edition (or any producer requirement), service chemistry, concentration and temperature, required testing and documents, traceability, finish and delivery location. Availability and the accepted specification route are confirmed with the quotation.
