Carbon steel grades, chemistry, standards and RFQ reference data
Process pipe, line pipe, low-temperature components, boiler tube, structural and pressure plate grades with chemistry, mechanical and impact data by product form and delivery condition. Values carry an explicit basis label (specification, producer or historical); confirm the ordered standard edition, grade/PSL and product form on the material certificate.

A common carbon-steel chemistry is not meaningful across these products — A106 (seamless HT), A53 (by type), A333 (low-temp) and API 5L (by PSL/route) are separate specifications. PSL2 adds P ≤0.025, S ≤0.015 and CE/microalloy limits. * agreement-qualified. Rows marked producer/historical are reference values, not verified current-edition normative tables; API 5L 47th edition (June 2026, Monogram effective 1 July 2027) changes chemistry and toughness — specify the contractually adopted edition. Final chemistry is confirmed on the heat-wise MTC.

These are producer-published product limits, sometimes tighter than the normative table, shown with their basis. A516 Gr. 70 carbon 0.27% is not universal — it rises with thickness (* range shown for 5–25 up to 50–80 mm). WPB/WPC heat treatment depends on forming history; A105 is not automatically normalized (normalized product is A105N). Residual, heat/product-analysis and footnote details need the ordered ASTM edition (A105-26, A234-26, A420-26, A350-26a, A516-25) for a complete table.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| A234 WPB (fitting) | 240 | 415–585 | long. 22% / trans. 14% | per forming history |

Values are specification minima or producer-scoped ranges as labelled — not "solution-annealed" (that is stainless-template wording) and not one universal figure. A105 tensile is a 485 MPa minimum, not the 485–655 MPa range that belongs to A350 LF2. Yield is reported per the standard's method ("yield strength"), not necessarily 0.2% proof. Elongation depends on specimen type, gauge length, orientation and thickness — state its basis. Carbon-steel standards may use A20 elongation adjustments.
Impact Toughness & Low-Temperature Selection
| Product | Charpy (full-size 10×10 mm) | Test temperature |
|---|---|---|
| A333 Gr. 1 / 6 (pipe) | avg 18 J (set), single ≥14 J | −50°F [−45°C] (historical table) |
| A420 WPL6 (fitting) | avg 18 J, single ≥14 J | −45°C (−50°F) — not 27/20 J |
| A350 LF2 Class 1 (forging) | avg ≈20 J, single ≈16 J | −46°C |
| A350 LF2 Class 2 (forging) | avg ≈27 J, single ≈20 J | −18°C |
A Charpy test temperature is not a system's minimum design metal temperature (MDMT). A333 Gr. 6 is a low-temperature, notch-toughness material — not a blanket cryogenic/LNG approval. −46°C is the arithmetic conversion of −50°F; the ordered unit system, edition, specimen size (subsize energies reduce), thickness, weld/HAZ requirements and construction-code rules govern acceptance. LF2 Class 1 and Class 2 are different impact categories and are not interchangeable.
Physical Properties (representative)
| Property | Approximate value | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Density | ≈ 7,850 kg/m³ (7.85 g/cm³) | ambient reference estimate |
| Young's modulus | ≈ 200 GPa | room temperature |
| Magnetic response | Ferromagnetic | — |
| Thermal conductivity / expansion / heat capacity / resistivity | Grade- and temperature-dependent — obtain a grade-specific producer dataset | withheld: not verified per grade |
These are approximate reference values at a stated condition, not specification guarantees. Precise thermal properties depend on grade and temperature (instantaneous vs mean expansion coefficient and interval, conductivity/heat-capacity temperature, composition-dependent melting range) and are not published here without a verified grade-specific source. Do not treat a single physical-property table as valid for every carbon steel.

| Structural | A36; A283; IS 2062 E250/E350; EN S235/S275/S355 | Exact grade / subgrade; not a pressure-service substitute |
| Companion bolting | A193 B7 & A320 L7 (Cr-Mo alloy) with A194 2H nuts | Diameter, thread, HT, coating, proof/impact by size |
Material, dimensional, design-code, testing and documentation standards serve different purposes — do not blend them. ASTM "A" and ASME "SA" are not an automatic dual-certification claim. A193 B7 and A320 L7 are alloy-steel bolting grades (typically 4140), listed here only as companion joint hardware, not carbon-steel chemistry families. EFW "A671/A672" alone is incomplete without the grade and class.
Pipe Schedules, Tube Dimensions & Flange Classes
| Concept | Correct treatment |
|---|---|
| Schedule | A wall-thickness designation, not a pressure rating. Required wall comes from design conditions and code calculation with tolerances, allowances and joint factors. |
| STD / XS / XXS | Wall designations, not universal synonyms for Sch 40 / 80 / 160. XXS is never Sch 160. STD = Sch 40 only through NPS 10; XS = Sch 80 only through NPS 8. |
| NPS / DN | Nominal designations — not the measured ID. ID = OD − 2 × wall; published masses are theoretical. |
| Flange class | Class 150 does not mean 150 psi at every temperature; ratings depend on material group and temperature. B16.5 (½–24", Class 2500 to 12") and B16.47 (26–60", Series A/B) are different systems. |
| Weight estimate | Mass (kg/m) = π × wall × (OD − wall) × density × 10⁻⁶ ≈ 0.02466 × wall × (OD − wall) at 7,850 kg/m³ (nominal, mm). |
For full dimensional data see the Pipe Schedule Chart. ASME B36.10 standardises pipe dimensions only — it does not establish grade, pressure rating, corrosion allowance or fitness for service.
Corrosion Protection & Service Selection
| Topic | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Corrosion | Unprotected carbon steel corrodes in atmospheric, water and soil exposure — it is not corrosion resistant. Select protection for the actual environment and design life (ISO 12944 for paint systems). |
| Coating / lining | Specify surface preparation, coating/lining chemistry, film thickness, application, inspection, repair and service temperature. Zinc, paint, internal lining and buried-pipe protection solve different conditions. |
| Corrosion allowance | Set by the expected mechanism/rate, design life, inspection and governing code — not an unqualified 1.5 or 3 mm. Allowance is not immunity to cracking or localized attack. |
| Sour service | Distinguish NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 (oil & gas production) from MR0103 / ISO 17945 (refining). Record environment, material condition, hardness, fabrication and qualification basis; "NACE compliant" alone is insufficient. |
| HIC / SSC / SOHIC | Different mechanisms and tests — TM0284 (HIC), TM0177 (SSC); specify solution, duration, specimen orientation, stress and acceptance. Naming a test is not enough. |
| High temperature | No universal 425°C cutoff — design allowable stress, oxidation, creep and graphitisation (~425–600°C, long exposure) can govern above ~425°C. |
Welding & Fabrication
Carbon-equivalent indices (elements as mass %):
| Index | Formula |
|---|---|
| CE (IIW) | C + Mn/6 + (Cr + Mo + V)/5 + (Ni + Cu)/15 |
| Pcm | C + Si/30 + (Mn + Cu + Cr)/20 + Ni/60 + Mo/15 + V/10 + 5B |
| Item | Guidance |
|---|---|
| CE limits | No universal CE ≤0.40/0.43/0.45 or Pcm ≤0.25 — limits depend on standard, grade, thickness, manufacture, edition and purchaser. Pcm suits modern low-carbon steels (C ≲ 0.11%). |
| Preheat | Chosen from the applicable code and qualified procedure using chemistry, thickness, restraint, hydrogen, heat input and environment. A blanket "no preheat needed" is incorrect. |
| PWHT | Comes from the construction code, material group, thickness, joint/service and qualified procedure — not automatically required nor universally waived. Distinguish hydrogen-removal postheat from stress-relief PWHT. |
| ASME IX | Qualifies procedures/personnel; it does not replace the construction code's design, examination, preheat/PWHT, toughness or acceptance requirements. |
Applications, Industries & Grade Guidance
| Application | Relevant starting point | Selection information to state |
|---|---|---|
| Process / elevated-temperature piping | A106 pipe; A234 WPB/WPC; A105 forgings | Design code, pressure/temperature, corrosion mechanism, heat treatment, thickness, allowable stress |
| General utility pipe | A53 by grade & type | Finish (black/galvanised), welding/threading, fluid — not inherently "low pressure" |
| Transmission pipelines | API 5L by edition, PSL, grade, route | Fracture control, weldability, tolerances, route/service annexes — strength grade alone insufficient |
| Low-temperature service | A333 Gr. 6, A420 WPL6, A350 LF2 by class | Component-specific impact & HT; weld/HAZ toughness; code MDMT — no generic LNG claim |
| Pressure vessels | A516 Gr. 55/60/65/70 | Thickness-specific chemistry, delivery condition, toughness, design-code |
| Boilers / heat exchangers | A179 / A192 / A210 / A214 | Seamless vs welded, min vs nominal wall, end prep, HT, tube tests |
| Sour / wet CO₂ / H₂ service | Project-specific material & test spec | Environmental limits and damage mechanisms need engineering review |
Candidate specification families for enquiry — not substitutions or material-selection approvals. Pressure capacity is calculated, never ranked from a grade label alone.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between ASTM A106 and A53 pipe?
A106 specifies seamless carbon-steel pipe for high-temperature service. A53 covers seamless and welded pipe types for general applications. Compare the ordered grade, manufacturing type, tests and design requirements — neither name alone establishes an allowable working pressure.
Are API 5L PSL1 and PSL2 interchangeable?
No. PSL2 adds or changes chemistry, strength limits, testing and traceability. State the adopted edition, grade, route and delivery condition. A single Grade B chemistry row cannot describe both levels.
Does A333 Grade 6 guarantee cryogenic or −46°C operation?
No. The specified Charpy test temperature and specimen requirements must be read in the ordered unit system and edition. Minimum design metal temperature also depends on the construction code, dimensions, stress and fabrication.
Does Schedule 40 or Class 150 indicate pressure?
No. Schedule is a wall-thickness designation; flange class is a rating basis that varies with material group and temperature. Allowable pressure is calculated from material, temperature, dimensions, tolerances and the design code.
Product Range
The carbon steel range can be supplied with related pipes, tubes, butt weld fittings, forged fittings, flanges, fasteners and custom fabricated items where required by the BOQ.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between ASTM A106 and A53 pipe?
A106 specifies seamless carbon-steel pipe for high-temperature service. A53 covers specified seamless and welded pipe types for its general pipe applications. Compare the ordered grade, manufacturing type, tests and design requirements. Neither name alone establishes an allowable working pressure.
Are API 5L PSL1 and PSL2 interchangeable?
No. PSL2 adds or changes requirements such as chemistry, strength limits, testing and traceability. State the adopted edition, grade, manufacturing route and delivery condition. A single Grade B chemistry row cannot describe both levels.
Does A333 Grade 6 guarantee operation at −45°C or −46°C?
No. The specified Charpy test temperature and specimen requirements must be read in the ordered unit system and edition. Minimum design metal temperature also depends on the construction code, dimensions, stress and fabrication requirements.
Are A105 and A350 LF2 equivalent?
No. They are different forging specifications. LF2 includes class-dependent low-temperature toughness requirements. A component described as dual-certified must have documentary evidence that it meets both applicable specifications.
What is the difference between WPB and WPL6 fittings?
WPB belongs to A234; WPL6 belongs to A420 for low-temperature service. Their chemistry, manufacturing, treatment and impact requirements differ. Matching dimensions or tensile strength does not establish interchangeability.
Is Schedule 40 a pressure rating?
No. It is a wall-thickness designation associated with pipe size. Allowable pressure depends on material, temperature, dimensions, tolerances, corrosion allowance, joint factors and the governing design code.
Does Class 150 mean 150 psi?
No. Flange pressure–temperature ratings depend on the relevant standard, material group and temperature. The nominal class number is not a universal pressure limit.
Why can A516 Grade 70 chemistry differ between plates?
The applicable limits depend on thickness and analysis basis, with standard footnotes and any tighter purchase requirements. The actual heat analysis belongs on the material certificate; one carbon maximum does not describe every thickness.
Can carbon steel be used in sour service?
Only when the actual material condition, environment, fabrication and required qualification satisfy the applicable project requirements. Specify the relevant sour-service standard and any HIC/SSC tests and acceptance criteria. A grade name or generic "NACE compliant" label is insufficient.
