Basic Description

Sagiant Piping Industries supports enquiries for HASTELLOY nickel-alloy pipes, tubes, butt weld fittings, forged fittings, flanges, bars and other specified product forms. Core grades are the nickel-chromium-molybdenum corrosion alloys C-276, C-22 and C-2000, the nickel-molybdenum grades B-2 and B-3 for reducing acids, and the high-temperature grade X. The corrosion (C/B) grades and the high-temperature grade X serve different duties and are not interchangeable. Grades are compared by composition, supply condition, applicable ASTM specification and the specific service environment, and availability, inspection scope and documentation (EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2) are confirmed against each enquiry. HASTELLOY is a registered trademark of Haynes International; Sagiant is an independent supplier and stockist, not the alloy producer.

Producer/specification reference limits; “bal” denotes balance and is not a fixed value — X nickel is the balance (about 47%), not a demonstrated contractual minimum. A dash means not separately specified, not zero. B-2 and B-3 are distinct grades with different chromium, iron and stabilising additions. These are not full heat analyses — the purchase specification edition and heat/product certificate control acceptance.

“Core” grades have completed records; “Reference” names are documented in producer literature and quoted until chemistry, form, specification and availability are confirmed — a listing is not a stock statement. Historical names (B, C, G, A, D) are tracked in a separate research register. Do not treat other brands (alloy 59, 686, Haynes 188/230/242) as HASTELLOY grades; cast grades, filler classifications and powder forms are separate from wrought base metal. UNS cross-references are not substitution approvals.

Confirm grade, UNS, form, size interval, condition, specification edition and test method on the certificate. C-22HS solution-treated, cold-worked and aged conditions are kept distinct (with hydrogen-embrittlement cautions). For X, add elevated-temperature tensile, creep, stress-rupture and thermal-stability data with time/stress/test basis; weld-metal, HAZ and base-metal properties are separated where claimed. Pressure-code allowable stresses reference the code, edition, form and temperature — not tensile strength.

Young’s and shear modulus, Poisson’s ratio, specific heat, thermal conductivity, mean thermal-expansion coefficient (with its interval), electrical resistivity and permeability are provided per grade on enquiry with temperature/condition. Do not publish a single family “non-magnetic” value as a precision property; distinguish mean expansion over an interval from instantaneous expansion.

A routing matrix for specification review, not a universal certification. General-requirement standards B829 (seamless tubular), B751 (welded tube), B775 (welded pipe) and B906 (flat) apply only where invoked. ASTM and ASME SB adoption editions are not automatically identical; an ASTM material specification does not by itself establish pressure-code approval. Rename designation “equivalents” as cross-references: C-276 N10276/2.4819; C-22 N06022/2.4602; C-2000 N06200/2.4675; B-2 N10665/2.4617; B-3 N10675/2.4600; X N06002/2.4665 — matching identifiers do not prove identical limits, condition or code eligibility.

Available Forms, Sizes & Availability

Availability is confirmed per enquiry with stocked / sourced / made-to-order status — the ranges below are indicative, not a statement that every grade is held in every size, schedule and condition.

FormSize rangeWall / thickness / ratingDimensional / material route

FlangesClass 150–1500 to NPS 24; Class 2500 to NPS 12 onlyFacing / bore / rating per classB16.5 dims; B564 / B462 material

Class 2500 is a flange pressure class, not “2500 psi”, and B16.5 Class 2500 extends only to NPS 12. STD/XS do not always equal Sch 40/80, and 40S/80S differ from 40/80 at some sizes. Keep dimensional standards (B36.10 / B36.19) separate from material specifications. See the schedule chart and weight calculator.

Corrosion & Temperature Selection

  • B-series (B-2, B-3): excellent in reducing acids such as hydrochloric acid, but they contain little or no chromium, so oxidising contaminants (ferric/cupric ions, aeration, oxidising acids) can cause rapid attack — not for “all concentrations” without purity, temperature and oxidant limits.
  • C-series (C-276, C-22, C-2000) and G grades: broad resistance to mixed oxidising and reducing acids and chlorides. C-22 has higher chromium (better in oxidising conditions) and C-276 higher molybdenum/tungsten (strong in reducing conditions) — comparisons are environment-specific, not a universal ranking.
  • Distinguish wet (moist) chlorine and hypochlorite from dry chlorine; specify concentration, temperature, aeration, contaminants, crevices and weld condition. Publish corrosion rates only with the test solution, temperature, duration and specimen condition.
  • X (high-temperature): selected for strength and oxidation resistance in furnace/combustion service — not an aqueous-corrosion choice. Its high-temperature capability is not an unrestricted load-bearing or pressure-design limit; separate oxidation exposure, creep/rupture life and code limits.
  • ASTM G28 detects specific intergranular-corrosion susceptibility for particular alloys and specimen states; it is a test method with named applicability and acceptance, not a blanket guarantee of service resistance. Sour-service (ISO 15156 / NACE MR0175) needs the applicable part/edition, grade, condition, hardness and environmental limits.

Welding, Fabrication & Machining

  • Use a qualified WPS/PQR; filler is selected by grade, service, joint, dilution and post-weld condition — filler and wrought base-metal chemistries are separate records. Matching the family name does not guarantee weld performance.
  • No universal anneal-and-quench rule: corrosion grades are usually supplied solution-annealed and are often used as-welded, while heavy deformation or severe service may call for solution treatment with the qualified cooling method. X producer guidance says post-weld heat treatment is not generally required — do not prescribe one cycle for all grades.
  • B-2 versus B-3 structural stability differs; C-22HS strengthening must not inherit standard C-22 instructions.
  • Control cleanliness and contamination before welding; manage heat input, interpass and (for corrosion service) weld-metal corrosion implications.
  • Machining: these alloys work-harden; use rigid setups, positive feed, sharp tooling and appropriate coolant rather than rubbing.

Testing & Documentation

ItemBasis
Heat chemistryLaboratory analysis; handheld PMI/XRF confirms major elements only and cannot measure carbon or verify heat treatment
Tensile / proof / elongationPer ordered specification, product and condition
Intergranular corrosion (ASTM G28)Named method (A or B), specimen state, duration and acceptance — alloy-applicability specific, not a universal package
NDE / hydro / dimensionalPer specification and product form
CertificationEN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 (3.2 needs the agreed independent validation)

G28, PMI and a certificate confirm what each test covers — they do not by themselves establish performance in every process environment. Specify supplementary tests, corrosion method/acceptance and certificate type at ordering; confirm availability before promising them unconditionally.

Component and environment drive the grade: B-series for reducing acids, C/G-series for mixed oxidising-reducing and chloride media, and X for high-temperature strength and oxidation — not aqueous corrosion. The correct grade, form and condition depend on the specific environment, temperature, stress and life required.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How do Hastelloy C-22 and C-276 compare?

Both are nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloys with broad resistance to mixed oxidising and reducing acids and chlorides. C-22 has higher chromium and performs better in oxidising conditions, while C-276 has higher molybdenum plus tungsten and is strong in reducing conditions. Selection is environment-specific and should be confirmed with corrosion data — neither is universally “better”.

Why can oxidising contamination be a problem for B-2 and B-3?

The nickel-molybdenum B alloys resist non-oxidising (reducing) acids such as hydrochloric acid very well but contain almost no chromium, so oxidising contaminants — ferric or cupric ions, aeration, oxidising acids — can cause rapid attack. They are not interchangeable with the chromium-bearing C alloys, and “all concentrations” needs purity, temperature and oxidant limits.

What is the difference between B-2 and B-3?

Both are Ni-Mo alloys for reducing acids, but B-3 (UNS N10675) has improved thermal and structural stability and fabrication behaviour compared with the older B-2 (N10665). They are separate grades with different minor-element control and are certified individually — their data should not be combined.

Is Hastelloy X a corrosion-resistant piping alloy?

No. X is a high-temperature nickel-chromium-iron-molybdenum alloy chosen for strength and oxidation resistance in furnace and combustion service, not for aqueous acid corrosion. Its high-temperature capability is not an unrestricted load-bearing or pressure-design limit — oxidation exposure, creep/rupture life and code allowables are separate.

Which standards cover Hastelloy bar and plate?

It depends on the alloy family. C-series (C-276, C-22, C-2000) bar is ASTM B574 and plate/sheet/strip B575; the B-series (B-2, B-3) use B335 for bar and B333 for plate/sheet/strip; alloy X uses B572 (bar) and B435 (plate/sheet/strip). Seamless pipe/tube is B622, welded pipe B619 and welded tube B626.

Can Hastelloy be supplied and used in the as-welded condition?

Often, yes — the corrosion grades are usually supplied solution-annealed and are frequently used as-welded with a qualified procedure and the correct filler. Heavy deformation or severe service may require solution treatment with a specified cooling method, and X producer guidance says post-weld heat treatment is not generally required. There is no single anneal-and-quench rule for all grades.

Does an ASTM G28 or PMI result prove corrosion or sour-service suitability?

No. ASTM G28 detects specific intergranular-corrosion susceptibility with a named method, specimen state and acceptance, and PMI confirms major elements only. Neither establishes performance in every process environment, and sour service requires the applicable ISO 15156 / NACE MR0175 part, grade, condition, hardness and environmental limits.

Does the Hastelloy name identify the exact material?

HASTELLOY is a trademark of Haynes International covering many distinct grades. Always identify the exact grade and UNS number (for example C-276 / N10276) rather than the brand name alone, and do not assume other brands such as alloy 59 or 686 are HASTELLOY grades. We identify material by UNS and the applicable specification.

What information is needed for a quotation?

Provide the grade and UNS, product form, standard and edition, condition, dimensions and wall, quantity, service environment and temperature (acid type/concentration, chlorides, oxidisers), required testing (chemistry, corrosion method/acceptance, NDE) and inspection document, and delivery location. Availability and inspection scope are confirmed with the quotation.
