How it is made
Speciality fittings are hot-formed, forged, induction-bent or fabricated from pipe and plate, then heat treated and machined to the approved drawing. High-yield pipeline fittings (A860 WPHY) are normalised, normalised & tempered or quenched & tempered to meet the grade; induction bends are formed by localised induction heating and controlled bending (ASME B16.49 / ISO 15590-1 for carbon & low-alloy pipeline steel), with the heat-treatment condition set by the grade and specification. Barred tees carry welded guide bars to an approved design (a flow tee uses a swept branch, not necessarily guide bars); supplying a split-tee or hot-tap fitting is separate from qualifying the in-service operation (API RP 2201).

Frequently asked questions
What counts as a speciality or custom pipe fitting?
Fittings beyond standard catalogue tees, elbows and reducers — barred (pig) tees, flow tees, lateral tees, split (hot-tap) tees, crosses, induction bends, swage nipples, bull plugs and engineered forgings made to a client drawing. Standard geometry follows ASME B16.9; modified and engineered items are made to the applicable MSS standard or the project specification.
Which standard applies to which speciality fitting?
They differ by product. ASME B16.9 covers wrought butt-weld fittings; MSS SP-75 covers high-yield (WPHY) pipeline fittings; MSS SP-97 covers integrally reinforced branch outlets; MSS SP-95 covers swage nipples and bull plugs; and ASME B16.49 / ISO 15590-1 cover induction bends in carbon and low-alloy pipeline steel. Not every standard applies to every item, and the governing edition is confirmed per order.
Are induction bends available in stainless, duplex and nickel alloys?
Yes, but ASME B16.49 and ISO 15590-1 are written for carbon and low-alloy pipeline steel. Bends in stainless, duplex, nickel alloys or titanium are made and qualified to the project specification rather than automatically to those pipeline-steel standards, with the acceptance criteria agreed for the grade.
Do the A860 WPHY grades match API 5L?
A860 WPHY fittings correspond to the yield levels of API 5L X-grade line pipe and are used on the same pipelines, but they are manufactured and certified to ASTM A860, not to API 5L. We state the actual A860 grade and its acceptance values rather than certifying a fitting to the pipe standard.
How are speciality-fitting weights and dimensions quoted?
Dimensions are given per product — run / branch size and wall for tees, and bend radius (for example 3D–10D) for induction bends, which is a radius, not a wall or pressure figure. Weight is quoted per finished item from the BOM or CAD model, since engineered fittings are not straight pipe and a per-metre pipe formula does not apply.
Do you carry out the hot-tap, or only supply the fitting?
We supply split tees and hot-tap fittings to the design specification. The in-service hot-tap, tapping and stopple operation is a separate activity performed by the qualified installer under API RP 2201 and the governing code; supplying the fitting does not include qualifying or performing that operation.
What do you need to quote a speciality fitting?
Provide the item type, run and branch OD / NPS and wall, material grade / class / condition, the applicable standard and edition, bend radius / angle where relevant, required tests and certification (EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2, PMI, NACE), quantity and any drawing. Availability by item, size and grade is confirmed with the quotation.
