How it is made
A flow tee is a run / branch tee whose branch is contoured (swept) to an approved design so that cleaning and inspection tools travel along the run. The tee body is hot-formed or forged and supplied in the specified condition (A860 WPHY normalised, normalised & tempered or quenched & tempered; austenitic stainless solution annealed; duplex solution annealed and quenched); weld ends are bevelled to ASME B16.25. The internal arrangement — swept branch and, where a design uses one, a sleeve or slots — follows the approved drawing and the pipeline / tool requirements; a flow tee is not the same as a barred tee, which uses guide bars.

Frequently asked questions
What is a flow tee?
A flow tee is a run / branch tee whose branch is contoured (swept) to an approved design so that cleaning and inspection tools travel along the run rather than dropping into the branch. The exact internal arrangement — swept branch and, in some designs, a sleeve or slots — is set by the approved drawing, so not every flow tee is the same design.
Is a flow tee the same as a barred tee?
No. A barred tee uses guide bars across the branch opening; a flow tee uses a contoured (swept) branch, and some designs add a sleeve or slots. Both aim to keep tools on the run, but the geometry and pig compatibility differ and are fixed by the approved design, not assumed interchangeable.
Does the swept branch guarantee lower pressure loss or that any pig passes?
No. Any reduction in turbulence or loss depends on the geometry, flow split / direction and service, so we quote the open-flow area and a hydraulic assessment where specified rather than a universal loss figure. Pig passage is confirmed against the approved design and the specific tool, and by a passage trial where required.
Which standards apply to a flow tee?
The tee body follows ASME B16.9 for dimensions, or MSS SP-75 for high-yield (WPHY) wrought pipeline fittings, with ASME B16.25 end preparation. The finished flow-tee design is qualified to the approved drawing and the project code; a standard designation alone does not qualify a custom pressure-containing assembly.
How are flow-tee weights and dimensions quoted?
Per finished item, from the BOM or CAD model. A straight-pipe formula or a standard equal-tee weight does not represent a contoured flow tee, and there is no single exact weight for every design at the same NPS and schedule; custom dimensions and weight are issued with the approved drawing.
What do you need to quote a flow tee?
Provide run and branch NPS and wall, equal or reducing configuration, body material, standard editions, design / service conditions, the pig / tool details and flow direction(s), the drawing where available, and the required inspection and documentation package. Availability by material, size and design is confirmed with the quotation.
