Basic Description

Sagiant Piping Industries supports enquiries for René 41 / R-41 (UNS N07041, Werkstoff 2.4973) as bar, forgings, rings, sheet/plate, wire, fasteners and investment castings for aerospace and gas-turbine applications. René 41 is an age-hardenable nickel-base superalloy strengthened by gamma-prime Ni₃(Al,Ti) precipitation. It retains high strength through roughly the ~980°C region, but that is not a universal service limit — usable temperature depends on stress, service life, duty cycle, atmosphere and section, and an oxidation or strength figure is not automatically a rotating-part fatigue or rupture allowable. Material is supplied by form and condition (solution treated, or solution + precipitation aged) against the applicable AMS references, with acceptance limits and editions confirmed per order and EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 documentation. René 41 is a trademarked alloy; Sagiant is an independent supplier and stockist, not the alloy producer, and the offer is mainly solid and flat products rather than seamless pipe.

René 41 (also written “Rene 41” / R-41) is a trademarked alloy; Sagiant is an independent supplier and stockist, not the alloy producer. The technical range is mainly solid and flat products (bar, forging, ring, sheet/plate) rather than seamless pipe.

Chemical Composition (wt %)

Producer nominal reference composition (Haynes register). Nominal unless marked maximum — not a universal acceptance table; validate against the selected wrought, casting or wire specification.
ElementMass %
Nickel, NiBalance
Chromium, Cr~19
Cobalt, Co~11
Molybdenum, Mo~10
Titanium, Ti~3.1
Aluminium, Al~1.5
Iron, Fe≤5
Silicon, Si≤0.5
Manganese, Mn≤0.1
Carbon, C~0.09
Boron, B~0.006
Zirconium, Zr≤0.07

Titanium and aluminium are shown separately. Phosphorus, sulfur, copper and other residual limits come from the selected specification and are confirmed per order; the nominal table alone is not complete specification chemistry, a dash is not zero, and heat analysis differs from check analysis. Limits from wrought, casting and wire routes are not combined.

Identity, specifications and product routes

A Werkstoff number is a designation, not a complete purchase specification. Matching N07041 does not prove identical melt practice, grain size, heat treatment, product properties or aerospace qualification.
RecordTreatment
Wrought René 41 / R-41Main base-alloy record (N07041); actual producer & product specification identified
Solution-treated wroughtSeparate delivery/property condition
Solution + precipitation-treated wroughtSeparate thermal cycle and mechanical requirements
Investment castingsSeparate route composition, properties, defects/inspection & specification (AMS 5399)
Welding wireSeparate consumable specification and weld-metal data (AMS 5800)
Powder / additiveAdded only with verified route-specific qualification
2.4973 cross-referenceRequires an actual standard and certified condition; not itself a purchase specification
Comparison alloysHaynes 282, Waspaloy and others — alternatives requiring engineering assessment, not equivalents

“René 41”, “Rene 41” and “R-41” are name variants of one grade, not separate grades; commercial products are not interchangeable merely because names match.

Mechanical Properties

Typical fully heat-treated (solution + aged) room-temperature producer values — not universal acceptance minima. Each figure depends on form, size, condition and thermal cycle.
Property (typical, aged)Value
Tensile strength~1420 MPa
0.2% yield strength~1060 MPa
Elongation~14%
HardnessCondition-dependent (a ~42 HRC sheet result is reported for one aging cycle); use the applicable standard limit, not a single 40 HRC maximum

Solution-treated properties differ from fully aged, and sheet, plate, bar/forgings and castings are separate datasets, each with its own source, form and condition. Elevated-temperature tensile, creep (temperature/stress/time/strain), stress-rupture, fatigue (LCF/HCF) and thermal-stability data are supplied with the applicable qualified dataset, otherwise identified as unavailable; code/OEM design allowables are distinguished from producer typicals.

Physical Properties

Producer reference physical data (temperature-dependent; confirm the checked revision and units).
PropertyValue
Density~8.25 g/cm³
Modulus of elasticity (27°C)~218 GPa
Shear modulus (27°C)~83 GPa
Poisson’s ratio~0.31
Melting rangePer producer datasheet
Thermal & electricalHeat capacity, thermal conductivity/diffusivity, electrical resistivity and mean expansion per producer temperature table
Magnetic responseQualitative unless a sourced permeability with field/condition is available

Temperature-dependent properties use each source’s own series and units rather than a single constant; a melting interval is not a maximum operating temperature.

Standards by Product Form & Condition

Verified specification mapping — manufacturing route, material, testing and design standards kept distinct; adopted revision confirmed per order (a contracted edition is not replaced automatically).
Form / roleReference
Investment castingsAMS 5399 (not a forged-ring or forging specification)
Sheet, strip & plateAMS 5545 (solution treated, precipitation-heat-treatable)
Bars, forgings & rings (solution treated, precipitation hardenable)AMS 5712
Bars, forgings & rings (solution + precipitation heat treated)AMS 5713 — not interchangeable with 5712
Welding wireAMS 5800 (welding consumable — not a sheet/plate specification)
FastenersExact material and finished-fastener/drawing, thread & inspection requirements (not “AMS bolting specs”)

Generic ASTM B-series or ASME SB references are not added merely because René 41 is nickel-based; the exact alloy/form is matched to scope and code acceptance. A dimensional standard does not by itself certify the material.

Available Forms, Sizes & Dimensions

Indicative supply scope — confirmed per form on enquiry with stocked / mill-order / custom status. The range is mainly solid and flat products.
FormBasis
BarsDiameter, length, tolerances, finish & heat-treatment condition
Sheet / strip / plateThickness, width, length, finish & tolerances (sheet and plate thickness ranges stated per form to avoid a gap between them)
Forgings / ringsRoute, OD/ID/height, machining allowance, grain flow & grain-size/inspection
CastingsSeparate geometry/inspection/condition where supplied
WireWelding wire, engineering wire and heading stock distinguished
FastenersPart/drawing standard, thread system/class, condition, manufacturing sequence & acceptance tests

No invented pipe schedules: any tubular offer requires a route and material specification first, and there is no routine tubular specification listed for R-41. Unsupported forms are marked “not offered” or “subject to technical confirmation”; stocked, mill-order and custom capability are kept distinct.

Temperature, Service & Corrosion

Producer guidance, not design approval — an oxidation or strength figure is not automatically a rotating-part fatigue or rupture allowable.
AspectConsideration
High-temperature strengthRené 41 retains high strength through roughly the ~980°C region, but this is incomplete as a universal limit — add stress, service life, duty cycle, atmosphere, section & surface condition
Application qualificationEach application linked to its form and qualification (casting vs forging matters for blades and wheels)
Corrosion modesOxidation, hot corrosion/sulfidation, molten deposits, carburisation/nitridation and aqueous attack assessed separately, with test conditions and metal loss/penetration — not blanket immunity

Strength positioning is stated against temperature, condition and metric rather than as an unqualified “highest-strength” ranking; resistance is not immunity.

Heat Treatment

Cycles tied to the actual route and property goal — producer guidance, not a universal recipe. Solution and aging temperatures/times/cooling and the property balance are set by the selected specification and form.
StepGuidance
Solution treatmentPer specification/form; higher and lower solution routes give different property tradeoffs
AgingCommercial aging through ~760–982°C (broader than a 760–900°C envelope), by property goal
Cooling / cycleTime and cooling per the governing specification; not a single fixed recipe

Hot-forging temperature guidance is separate from the room-temperature delivery condition; the exact solution/aging cycle is governed by the selected specification.

Welding & Fabrication

René 41 is susceptible to strain-age cracking — welding feasibility is separated from restored design properties, and procedures are qualified for the intended service.
TopicGuidance
Strain-age crackingControlled by initial condition, filler choice, restraint, heating rate through sensitive temperature regions and heat-treatment sequence
Filler & processFiller identity (matching welding consumable vs non-welding wire), process, cleaning, shielding/root protection & interpass/heat-input control
Post-weldPWHT and inspection; weld-metal properties distinguished from restored base-metal design properties
Forming & machiningHot/cold forming, work hardening, intermediate annealing, machining/tooling & scale-removal guidance

A qualified procedure — not website temperature ranges — governs shop practice.

Testing & Documentation

Testing and certification per an agreed inspection plan — certificate type alone does not require every advertised test.
ItemScope
MechanicalRoom-temperature and elevated tensile, stress-rupture and grain size per contracted method & acceptance criteria
NDTAs specified for the form & class (castings inspected to their own criteria)
PMIConfirms alloy identity within the instrument/method capability; does not establish complete chemistry
CertificationEN 10204 3.1 (manufacturer) vs 3.2 (independent/third-party); document type does not inherently require every test

Contracted tests, methods and acceptance criteria are agreed at ordering with heat/lot traceability rather than promised unconditionally.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is René 41 a family of grades, and is “Rene 41” different from “R-41”?

René 41 is principally one alloy identity, UNS N07041 (Werkstoff 2.4973). “René 41”, “Rene 41” and “R-41” are name variants of the same grade, not separate grades. What varies is the product route (wrought, investment casting, welding wire) and the delivery condition (solution treated, or solution + precipitation aged). René 41 is a trademarked alloy and Sagiant is an independent supplier and stockist, not the producer.

What is the chemical composition of René 41?

Producer nominal composition is approximately Cr 19, Co 11, Mo 10, Ti 3.1, Al 1.5, C 0.09, B 0.006, with Fe ≤5, Si ≤0.5, Mn ≤0.1 and Zr ≤0.07, and nickel as balance. That is a nominal reference, not complete specification chemistry — phosphorus, sulfur, copper and other residual limits come from the selected wrought, casting or wire specification, and the mill certificate governs. A dash is not zero.

What hardness does aged René 41 reach?

There is no single 40 HRC maximum. Hardness depends on the heat-treatment cycle — a sheet result of about 42 HRC is reported for one aging condition. The applicable value is the limit or typical range stated for the specific condition in the selected specification, not a universal maximum.

Which specification applies to each product form?

By form and route: AMS 5399 for investment castings, AMS 5545 for sheet/strip/plate, AMS 5712 for bars/forgings/rings (solution treated, precipitation hardenable), AMS 5713 for bars/forgings/rings (solution + precipitation heat treated), and AMS 5800 for welding wire. AMS 5399 is not a forging specification and AMS 5800 is not a sheet/plate specification. The form, condition and adopted edition are confirmed per order.

Does Sagiant supply René 41 pipe?

The verified René 41 range is mainly solid and flat products — bar, forging, ring, sheet/plate — plus wire, fasteners and castings. There is no routine tubular specification listed for R-41, so we do not advertise a standard pipe schedule range. A custom tube can be discussed with a defined route and material specification, and unsupported tubular forms are marked “subject to technical confirmation” rather than filled with guessed schedules.

Is René 41 weldable?

René 41 is susceptible to strain-age cracking, so welding feasibility is separate from restored design properties. Successful welding depends on the initial condition, filler choice (matching welding consumable vs non-welding wire), restraint, cleaning, shielding, heat-input/interpass control, the heating rate through sensitive temperature regions and the post-weld heat-treatment sequence — all in a qualified procedure.

What information is needed for a quotation?

Provide the product form and route, dimensions and tolerances, quantity, delivery condition (solution / aged), the exact specification and edition, service temperature, stress and duty, required testing (RT/elevated tensile, stress-rupture, grain size, NDT), traceability and certificate type (EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2), finish and delivery location. Availability and the accepted specification route are confirmed with the quotation.
